People , do you not know that Hell is the ordinary grave?

For the Bible says that the dead are unconscious (Ecclesiastes 9:5,10). And Jehovah is going to take pain away forever (Revelation 21:3,4). So, if the dead are unconscious and no one is to feel pain past the thousand year reign, how can anyone be tormented forever?

The English word hell is in the Bible but does not mean a firey place of torment, but rather it is symbolic of total destruction... !

(Revelation 20:14) And death and Ha′des were hurled into the lake of fire. This means the second death, the lake of fire. How can a condition such as "death" and Hades be thrown into a fire, that does not make sense, something that is a condition being thrown into a real fire ??

It actually says "the lake of fire, this means THE SECOND DEATH," so the lake of fire is symbolic of total destruction from where their is NO resurrection.

Here is something to think about, Jude 7 says " So too Sod′om and Go‧mor′rah and the cities about them, after they in the same manner as the foregoing ones had committed fornication excessively and gone out after flesh for unnatural use, are placed before [us] as a [warning] example by undergoing the judicial punishment of everlasting fire."

So are Sodom ans Gomorrah still burning today ? So the fire here is everlasting destruction !

    1 Corinthians 15:50-53

I declare to you, brothers, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed—in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. (NIV)

The Bible uses the term "asleep" or "sleeping" when referring to the physical body of the believer at death. It is important to note that the term is used solely for believers. The dead body appears to be asleep when it is separated at death from the spirit and soul of the believer. The spirit and soul, which are eternal, are united with Christ at the moment of the believer's death (2 Corinthians 5:8). The body of the believer, which is mortal flesh, perishes, or "sleeps" until the day it is transformed and reunited to the believer at the final resurrection. (1 Corinthians 15:43; Philippians 3:21; 1 Corinthians 15:51)

    Philippians 3:20-21

But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body. (NIV)

    John 11:25-26

Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?" (NIV)

    2 Corinthians 5:8

Yes, we are fully confident, and we would rather be away from these earthly bodies, for then we will be at home with the Lord. (NLT)

    Philippians 1:22-23

But if I live, I can do more fruitful work for Christ. So I really don’t know which is better. I’m torn between two desires: I long to go and be with Christ, which would be far better for me. (NLT)

    Psalm 23:6

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. (NIV)

    John 14:1-3

"Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am." (NIV)

    Yes.

The word "hell" in the same verses in other translations of the Bible read "the grave," "the world of the dead," etc.

    Collier’s Encyclopedia (1986, Vol. 12, p. 28) says this concerning “Hell”:

“First it stands for the Hebrew Sheol of the Old Testament and the Greek Hades of the Septuagint and New Testament. Sheol in Old Testament times referred SIMPLY TO THE ABODE OF THE DEAD.”

"Hell" is an unsatisfactory translation of these original Bible words because of the way that the word “hell” is understood today. It is not a fiery place of torment. Rather, as Webster’s Third New International Dictionary, unabridged, under “Hell” says:

    “fr[om] . . . helan to conceal.”

The word “hell” originally conveyed no thought of heat or torment but simply of a ‘covered over or concealed place.’ In the old English dialect the expression “helling potatoes” meant, not to roast them, but simply to place the potatoes in the ground or in a cellar.

A good scriptural example is found at Acts 2:27 in the KJV where it mentions Jesus as having been in "hell":

"Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption."

Clearly, Jesus was not in a fiery place of torment. Rather, this word means, as the KJV New Testament Greek Lexicon describes, "the realm of the dead; later use of this word: the grave, death."

In Matthew 25:41, Jesus makes it clear that Hell was created for Satan and his angels. "Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.'" Hell was not created for man, but for the fallen angels. It was not the original plan to be the eternal destination for the unsaved, as Man was created to live forever with God in Heaven.

Hell is a literal place. Sorry to burst your bubble

Why would it be anything else, but then again how would anyone know for sure, especially when coming from the bible or any proclaimed holy book with an agenda to push. Christians are looking to convert more believers when they talk about the afterlife, not that any of them could actually know about that sort of thing--it's just what they like to believe with their faith.

I know no such thing, and neither do you. It might be educational to remember that knowing a thing and believing a thing are not the same. You believe that the dead are unconscious, I believe the dead are utterly gone. Neither of us knows, and we won't know until one or the other is demonstrated in an irrefutable fashion.

If hell is the ordinary grave, then we are all going there (no matter what we do). And in ordinary graves, bodies (no longer) get tormented from [Grave Robbers, Necrophiliacs].

This is an example of cherry picking and misinterpretation of verses. Jesus extensively talks about the eternal torments of hell in many parts of the Gospels. I see that you are a Jehovah's Witness, so you don't believe in hell. I believe your Church wrongly interprets Scripture.

=O a contradiction in the bible?!?!?! my GOODNESS!

it doesn't REALLY say unconscious tho... that's not to say there isn't a contradiction there.

what is with all these people who jump from question to question in the R&S section, posting that god isn't real? is it really worth their time? do they think they're accomplishing something? (although as much as could be accomplished by having a RATIONAL, point based civil argument with a creationist...

-_____-) not that i can justify my own actions - but there really is no substance to it - it's just a competition of who can say god is not real the soonest after a Q is posted...

if people REALLY wanted to waste their time tho, they should introduce a personal messaging system into yahoo answers... that would be quite a kerfuffle... but at least it would draw away spammers from this section =]

Dude, run from that demonic organization of false prophets in Brooklyn as fast as you can. They are setting themselves up as gods. You are being totally deceived by a satanic cult.

. . . You totally deny the Father by denying the Son!

Your complete ignorance of the oracles of God is brilliantly displayed in your question!

If you are serious about learning what the scriptures truly say about this matter, I will be glad to teach you. Be very prepared to spend months, and then years to know what they really say.

Are you in, or are you going to remain in the darkness?

You rise up against God with malicious intent! Your love of sin, and your continuous rebellion against God are obvious.

It is that obvious of what you are, by just your question, but I will help you if you truly care about life and the value of life.

Repentance toward the Father, and faith in Christ Jesus.

He died for our sins, according to the scriptures.

    He was buried.

He rose again on the third day, according to the scriptures.
