Snow Leopard or Mountain Lion?
I have a MacBook Pro from 2010 which came with Snow Leopard. Being my first Mac, I've been happy with it and had no problems with it.
Recently I decided to upgrade to Mountain Lion. So I bought a bigger HDD and did a fresh install. Thing is, now the computer does not at all run as smoothly as it did before. It keeps freezing randomly and is just slower in general than it was running Snow Leopard. Not being a very pleasant experience any more, I've instead been running Windows 7 using the Bootcamp feature.
I like OSX, but I don't know if I should stick with Mountain Lion, try and fix it, or reinstall Snow Leopard.
My biggest concern about Snow Leopard though... Is it still safe? Is Apple still releasing security updates, and if so, how long do you think they will continue to do so?
Anyone got any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
Hey Duncan. Thanks for your answer. Unfortunately my computer is already up to date. (Unfortunately, because then, that might not be the problem). In fact, the computer has frozen at least twice when trying to update the it; operating system and other Apple-related software, which is now done via iTunes. I haven't installed much yet because I'm not sure if a reinstall is needed or not.
Thanks for your answer relaxifi. I know that updates are managed through the Mac App Store. I don't know why I said iTunes... Anyway, I tried resetting the SMC (System Management Controller) and so far it does seem to run a little smoother. Hasn't frozen yet. I do have a Time Machine backup, so in case it still won't, I guess I can try that. Thanks again!

Updates don't happen through iTunes, they're managed with the App Store now. Just choose Apple>Software update on the upper left to make sure you're up to date. I run 10.8.2 on a 2009 MBP and it runs perfectly.
I would open up console and look for errors when it freezes. If it's hiccuping on some process that's non-Apple code you might need to separately install an update via its manufacturer's site. But honestly I didn't have to - I didn't even do a clean install, I just upgraded and everything has been fine ever since.
Do you have a clone or a time machine backup of your snow leopard state? I would fall back to that and then install Lion as an upgrade. It's the recommended way to do it and it worked perfectly for me.

You will need to establish what is upsetting the Mac. It is often just some software that needs updating (to be fully compatible with Mountain Lion) as the older version is struggling which appears as random "freezing".
Reinstalling Snow Leopard would be a backward step as increasingly software will require Mountain Lion features.
Snow Leopard itself is safe. Apple will address any major problems. Frequent updates to Java and Flash player will be the most needed security updates.

in the journey that your iMac has a minimum of 4GB of RAM, purchase Lion now. it rather is going to be quicker in use than OS 10.6, even nevertheless slower to start. you may no longer get it from the App shop, because of the fact Apple in basic terms delivers the maximum modern, OS 10.8. you may desire to call i-800-myapple and ask to purchase it. all the greater reason to get OS 10.7 till now it rather is long previous perpetually. in case you purchase it, you may set up it or no longer, yet merely purchase it. in case you pick to place in OS 10.7 and notice the variety you like it, you ought to use Disk application to make a 2nd partition, and set up it there. See the hyperlink under for an occasion of triple-boot Lion / Snow Leopard / abode windows 7.
