Infinitive: "volverse libre", "obtener la libertad". I can't really think of a good literal translation, but that's correct and means the same thing.
Became free: depends on the subjetc.
Yo me volví libre / Yo obtuve la libertad
Tú te volviste libre / Tú obtuviste la libertad
Él, ella se volvió libre / Él, ella obtuvo la libertad
Nosotros nos volvimos libres / Nosotros obtuvimos la libertad
Vosotros os volvisteis libres / Vosotros obtuvisteis la libertad
Ellos, ellas se volvieron libres / Ellos, ellas obtuvieron la libertad

The entire sentence is needed before a translation can be given. The reason is that are several ways it can be translated.
