Advice for a guard dog?
I'm planning on, in the next year or two, getting a dog as a lifelong companion (his life hopefully) and guard dog. I plan on taking him backpacking with me too. I'm strongly considering a German Shepherd.
I want the kind of dog that will stay when I say, no matter what is going on, and won't leave my side without my saying so.
I realize this will take a lot of resources, time, and effort. I'm prepared to dedicate all of these.
-What kind of training am I looking at?
-What's the price I should expect?
-Are, in your experience, any breeds better for what I'm looking for?
-Anything else you can advise or caution me on
Thank you.
That's interesting, considering I've had a Pit Bull for 5 years that's the most docile animal I've ever met.
Not to mention, the American Temper Testing Society found that pitbulls pass 86.8% of the time, beating the average of 81%.

Okay well firstly any dog can be trained to do all you are asking. One specific breed isn't better since a dog is ONLY AS GOOD AS HIS MASTER. Now German Shepherds are amazing dogs. My grandfather used to breed them and has had nothing but Shepherds. They are extremely loyal, very smart, and are used as guard dogs, police dogs, and in many other positions. You will have your basic training classes which could be costly depending on how often you want to take the dog each week. I have basic classes locally for 125 for a 6 week program. Then you may have further training to seek for the guard dog theory. We taught one of ours with a flash light he will not let you in the house if you have one on and he doesn't know you. An AKC registered German Shepherd can go anywhere from 1600-3200 depending on the breeder. An average pet shop sells them for 800-1200. The only thing I can say is that you want to make the dog feel loved and not used and if you can work with that and keeping yourself protected you're good.
and don't listen to Triste pitbulls will not turn unless, like any normal dog, you constantly abuse. Actually German Shepherds used to have the same rating as Pits once upon a time and now look at them. Maybe a pit would be good though since so many people automatically assume that Pits will them so just one look and you won't have a problem with anyone messing with you. Hikes would be good for them too since they were bred to help hunt bear and if you have kids or plan Pits are known as the nanny dog. :D hope this helped some

Depends on what you're gonna use it for. If you're going to hunt, the shepherd would be your worst choice.
Triste- Pit bulls are bred to fight bulls. They were trusted against ******* bulls. They are agressive against animals. They are not human agressive from nature, and will always love and protect their owner and family. If idiots like you, start to beat and abuse the pit, no wonder he's gonna turn your back on you.

Professional PPD training, starting at $10,000. A REAL PPD is hard to find, a GSD from strong working lines is what you want, however, these dogs have SERIOUS working drives, are not suitable as pets, have civil aggression, have VERY strong temperaments and WILL take advantage of a weak owner.
