Best cordless drill battery type?

What's the best cordless drill battery type that will be stored year around in a truck tool box in temperatures ranging from 0 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit? NiCd or Li-Ion?

A lot of people think cold kills batteries but it is actually heat that is bad for them. Often times people don't notice the diminished capacity until they are cold but they were probably ruined by the heat of the summer. Both kinds are ruined by the heat. It is best to store them in the coolest part of your truck. You might even consider getting a well insulated cooler to store your batteries. The inside of a cooler can get warm but it should stay cooler than the outside temp. If it is really hot, toss an ice pack in the cooler for the day. You don't have to go overboard with the icepack, you just want to lower the temp a bit, not freeze the tools.

    Light use--Makita

    Heavy Use-De Walt

    In between--Ryobi

I'd go with NiCd,just be sure to run out the battery all the way before charging it

HERE'S 2 MORE CENTS GUYS...... I'VE MAINLY USED DEWALT TOOLS FOR 20 YEARS WITH VERY LITTLE PROBLEM WITH TOOLS OR BATTERIES. I HAVE EXPERIENCED, HOWEVER, THAT NICAD BATTERIES SEEM TOO PETER OUT(DIE) TOO SOON RELATIVE TO MY EXPECTATIONS. I NOW HAVE ONE LI TOOL WHICH IS REALLY A STANDOUT IN ALL WAYS, THE IMPACT DRIVER. AND IT HAS CONVINCED ME THAT I SHOULD TAKE THE PLUNGE HERE IN 2013 TO MOVE TO ALL LI SLIDE IN BATTERY TOOLS FROM DEWALT.

THERE WAS A RECENT SAW TEST IN ONE OF THE TRADE MAGS. I THINK MILWAUKEE WON, BUT THE INTERESTING THING FOR ME WAS THAT THE DEWALT LI 20V BEAT OUT THE OTHER BATTERY TYPES TESTED IN DEWALT SAWS.

AS FAR AS THE HEAT ISSUE GOES, WE'VE ALL PROBABLY EXPERIENCED THAT YOUR CHARGERS WON'T BEGIN THE CHARGE CYCLE IF A NICAD HAS JUST COME OUT HOT FROM A TOOL. SO FAR I HAVEN'T EXPERIENCED THAT SAME CHARGER REACTION TO WARMER LI BATTERIES. MAYBE THEY WEREN'T HOT ENOUGH TO TRIGGER OFF THE CHARGER.....DON'T KNOW.

I'D BE TEMPTED TO KEEP THE BATTERIES OUT OF YOUR TOOLS AND INSIDE THE TRUCK CAB OUT OF THE SUN, TOO. JUST HAD A THOUGHT ON THAT.....YOU COULD EVEN HOOK UP AN INVERTER IN THE CAB AND BUILD A CUSTOM MADE BATTERY CARRIER SO YOU COULD KEEP YOUR BATTERIES ON A CHARGER WHEN NOT IN USE AS THEY RECOMMEND(AND PUT THE WHOLE CONTRAPTION INTO YOUR NEW ICED COOLER.......... :-) )............YOUR CREW MIGHT APPRECIATE THE ICED BEER AFTER WORK ON FRIDAY, TOO.......... I CAN SEE IT NOW...... THERE YOUR GO OFF TO YOUR LOCAL TRUCK DEALER FOR A NEW RIG TO HOUSE ALL YOUR NEW TOYS............MMMMMMM

THANKS FOR SHARING YOUR EXPERIENCES FELLAS.........AND GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR BATTERY DECISION, SIR.

    TREY

PS. A YEAR AGO I BOUGHT A DEWALT 18V GRINDER/CUT OFF TOOL AFTER I WATCHED MY CARPENTER USE HIS ON NUMEROUS ODD OCCASIONS ON A JOB. WELL, IT SAT FOR A WHILE TILL I USED IT THE FIRST TIME WITH THE CUT OFF BLADE. BOY DID I GET HOOKED. WHAT A GREAT OPTION WHEN YOU NEED IT......JUST USED IT TO CUT OFF NAILS I COULDN'T ACCESS WITH A CLAW TOOL. BUY THE TOOL......AND PUT ON YOUR EYE PROTECTION, SPARKS BOUNCE OFF EVERYWHERE.

AND DEWALT FINALLY HAS A LI SLIDE IN VERSION OF THEIR LONG IN THE TOOTH RIGHT ANGLE DRILL. A REALLY NICE TOOL. THE MAKITA CHUCK AREA IS SHORTER HOWEVER AND WOULD PROBABLY BE THE CATS MEOW FOR GETTING INTO THE VERY TIGHTEST PLACES.

Cordless drills use a rechargeable battery that is either nickel based or lithium ion. The best cordless drill battery for your drill is determined by several factors. The drill you purchased may only use one type of battery. If you have a choice, you should consider how often you use the drill and what you want to spend on a rechargeable battery pack. Nickel-based batteries cost less than lithium ion batteries but have a shorter charge life due to low energy density.
