My 1997 Ford F-250 4x4 auto drops rpms when put in reverse and it sometimes stalls. What is causing this problem?

Exactly what mine does, I thought it could be the Transmission but I have checked it very well, I found nothing. I put some premium transmission oil and it got a little better. Try doing that. Maybe what we need is a new trans.

This was a common problem, either the fluid is low or the filter is loose due to a flawed design that was later corrected. Get a motorcraft filter from a dealer and 8 quarts of fluid. Drop the pan and remove the filter. Use a 3/8 drive extension, the female end, to pry the gasket for the filter out of the bore. (It's the safest way to do it, so you don't scratch the bore) I don t remember what year they quit using the cork gasket but if the gasket in it isn't cork it's reuseable, reuse it don't replace it with cork. A 4wd trans will take about 8 quarts, 2wd a little less. The actual cause of the stalling is air ingestion causing the convertor clutch to lock up. Good luck, should be a pretty easy fix.

Your transmission, I believe, mine does it if I have to push on the gas pedal if it won't reverse on its own.
