Why do the UK government charge stamp duty?

I can't understand why when you buy a property that you are hit with such a charge? Can anyone explain the rational behind it?

Stamp Duty is another word for 'tax'. It's just called that so people think the money goes to the Post Office! Another stealth tax is 'Duty' which is charged mainly on alcohol and fuel for motor vehicles. Here's the body blow you may not realise, when you buy alcohol, the price is made up from the producers wholesale price + duty + VAT (another tax) so you end up paying tax on another tax. Great isn't it!

Liberalism and leftism is the reason behind the stamp duty charge. The welfare state is unsustainable so they have to tax everything that moves, tax everything that doesn't move, and in this instance tax something you lick.

They would tax the air you breath if they could and when they were finished with that they would also tax you when you exhale. As a Brit you must know about tales of old England when they even taxed windows in homes, which cause many people to have fewer windows and very small ones. And they also taxed clocks, which gave the gentlemen a good excuse to duck down to the pub to check the time and maybe have a pint with their mates while they were there. Yes the pint was taxed as well.

If you did not pay stamp duty you would have to pay tax on something else.

OK - if stamp duty is withdrawn - what will you raise that much tax on?
