Is it bad i didn't give tip?
the restaurant closes at 9:30 we got in late & the food arrived at 9:10.. which left us in a rush to eat. the total was $45.. and the waiter talked to everyone else in their tables but mine. not even a simple small talk. me & my bf felt very left out & they didnt treat us with the same attention as with everyone else. Then since everyone was leaving we barely finnished anything so we decided to pack it up for home so i asked for a box. the (box was so small.). and there were still leftovers. why waste it? So i asked the waiter for another box & he tells me he cant give me another box its one per table. But we only had 20 mins to finnish our food & we felt he did really poor service. and instead of giving me a box. (dont knw why a box would cost tht much? ). he wraps our food in aluminum. -.- so when i got it. i was very dissapointed. and decided to leave without tipping. I never not tipped before but to me, tipping should be out of generosity and given to someone deserving of it. Is it wrong that i didnt tip him at all? as we left the only thing he said was "goodnight." and i think he expected to see change on the table... what do you guys think?

If you didn't feel you received good service then you don't have to tip.
Tipping is appreciation for good service, you didn't feel you received good service so you didn't tip.
No problem.

To the person from England, Waiters and Waitresses rely solely on tips. Yes they are that poor. Unlike in England, the US pays them around $3-4 an hour + the tips they get. People in America usually tip because they know that they're not getting paid much. However in England, waiters and waitresses have a set pay.
Anyways, even if the Restaurant closes at 9:30, you don't have to leave until you're done with your food. Would you have preferred your food raw if it came earlier? I can understand you not tipping if you had to wait for more than 30 minutes but if you got there at 8:30, looked at the menu for 10 minutes, and ordered at 8:40, expect it to be there by at most 9:10. He probably didn't give you a box because it's company policy. Blame the company, not the waiter. But I still understand your pain of waiting for 30 minutes. You could've at least tipped $5. But you must remember, people do have their bad days. It's easy for me to "act" happy behind my desk in the comfort of my own home but it's hard when you're constantly waiting people especially at night. Also remember that waiters and waitresses get paid much less than minimum wage per hour and they live off of tips. They probably get paid $3.50 an hour.

First question, why did you have to rush through your meal? When a restaurant closes at a specific time, it means that is the time they stop seating/serving food; it does not mean that they push you out the door. Usually especially on a weekend customers are still dining and enjoying their meals an hour or so after close time.
Also, if you have an issue with a waitstaff, please go speak with a manager, how is a restaurant able to remedy a problem if they are unaware.
I am mixed on tipping – as waitstaff in US are paid below minimum wage with the assumption they make tips. So if you do not tip they do not get paid and they pay taxes on assumed tips so it actually costs them money when one doesn’t tip at all. I usually leave a small tip 10% (to cover costs) if the service is poor and speak with a manager so they can make my dining experience be what I want.

Tips help insure good service. If you are treated rudely or unfairly, it is OK to not leave a tip. If service is especially bad it is customary in some areas to leave a penny to let your server know you thought the service was awful.
On the other hand, you should tip 15% for "normal" service and more if your server did an especially good job.

Don't feel bad at all.
Tipping is a courtesy. True, many waiters/waitresses live on tips so you should tip your servers if they do a competent job and tip them extra if they do a great job. But if you encounter an especially bad server (a certain level of bad is at your discretion), then don't feel guilty about not tipping at all. If you tip 99% of the time then you're still doing you're part to give thanks to the waitstaff community. Don't sweat it.
Sounds like the service sucked. Maybe when you go back and you get better service you' can tip them as usual.

In England in average restaurants it's rare to get a good tip. No one tips here and when i heard that Americans are offended if they don't get tipped, i was a bit offended. What, are they that poor that they need to have even more money that what is required, we all gotta live our own lives too. I can't believe i want to live in New York, i expect to sell a limb to be able to survive.

I wouldn't feel bad. Hopefully he got the message. But I think it's better to leave a lousy tip to try to make a point: lousy service = lousy tip. Sometimes a server will jump to the conclusion that no tip = asshole customer, and won't stop to think that they did a poor job.
By lousy tip, I mean a few cents. I know their salary is based mainly on tips, but they still have to earn those tips.
