First time taking a train..help!?

I live in Montclair and need to get to Sun Valley. According to the Metrolink website I will have to depart from Pomona union station, get off at Los Angeles Union station and depart once again from there to Lancaster union station. The trip is estimated to be a little over 2.5 hours. Anyway I have no problem with figuring out how to find my way and make sure I take the right train (I'm sure their employees/condutor will be glad to help)..my main question is will I need to pay for each train? My friend said it's 18$ to go to Los Angeles AND back. Will I need to pay another 18$ or more to take the second train to Lancaster? Or is there maybe an "all-day" pass I could purchase like they do on buses? Any feedback would be great. Please and Thank you.

There is no all-day pass on Monday through Friday. There is a $10 weekend pass, which is good from 7 p.m. Friday until the end of Sunday.

You do not have to depart from Pomona. You can depart from Montclair.

You do not have the prices correct.

It is cheaper if you buy a ticket from where you depart to Sun Valley and use it on all the trains. You can buy separate tickets for each train, but it costs more.

If you buy a ticket to Los Angeles Union Station, then you will need to pay $14 more for the trains from there to Sun Valley and back. However, if you buy the original ticket from where you depart to Sun Valley, then you can use it for both trains, and it only costs $3 or $3.50 more than the ticket to Los Angeles Union Station would have cost.

    If you buy separate tickets:

Pomona (North) to L. A. Union Station is $8.75 one-way or $17.50 round trip.

Montclair to L. A. Union Station is $9.25 one-way or $18.50 round trip.

    L. A. Union Station to Sun Valley is $7 one-way or $14 round trip.

If you buy one ticket to cover all the trains:

Montclair to Sun Valley is $11 one-way or $22 round trip.

Pomona (North) to Sun Valley is $10.25 one-way or $20.50 round trip.
