Why are some people so opposed to secularism?

It's not "anti-religion." It's simply a way of governing that doesn't enforce any particular religion. This is fair to EVERYONE because if one religion influenced matters, people of other religions would be forced to legally support that religion.

Also, using the argument that "religious politicians have done good things" doesn't really work, because good politicians are good because of how well they do their JOB. Secular politicians can do just as well, and perhaps better if they make decisions for the people and not their own personal convictions.

Isn't it selfish to expect a government to cater to Christianity, Islam, Judaism, or any other religion? Shouldn't religion be kept out of government so that everyone can practice as they please (as long as no one is hurt)? That means, for example, that specific churches can forbid gay marriage (which is true in states where gay marriage is legal), but there would be no official political opinion on gay marriage, except that it could be allowed in government courts or churches that support gay marriage.

Update:

Isaiah 40:31: And what "educating" do secularists need? "Christianity should be the dominant religion"?

Fear of losing their religious(Christian in America) privilege. The religious Right only cares about religious freedom for themselves. A significant number will make America a theocracy if they can.

Google Christian Dominionism/nationalism or go to About.com/Austincline. The Christian nutters only care about rights for themselve.

Edit: Deut 7:12 proves my point.

Objection. i in my opinion delight in my potential to coach my faith. Secularism isn't a similar ingredient because the separation of church and state. The separation of church and state, is definitely a word used to promote the freedom to coach faith. "note that i'm a operating in the direction of Germanic Heathen. i'm non secular, yet i do not imagine it is authorities's biz to meddle with non secular affairs." Then why are you actively advocating the limit on your non secular practices?

  • Islam, Christianity and most other religions have a history with a closetful of skeletons and horrible past practices. But the faithful blindly follow their faith.

State Atheism is a better idea than State Theism. Compare the USSR and Saudi Arabia? hmm...

They are raised to believe that their beliefs must be forced upon all via law. No other beliefs matter or should be respected in any way.

Because many religious people just know that they are better than anyone who doesn't believe them.

    Just ask them.

They're elitists who only believe in the Constitution on THEIR terms.

  • You premise is simply a strawman. That folks disagree on issues does not mean they are opposed to everything the opposition is about. To think so is just childish.

And the comment "there would be no official political opinion on gay marriage, except that it could be allowed in government courts or churches that support gay marriage." is just laughable in that allowing gay marriage is clearly an official political opinion.
