Les Miserables movie question Alfie Boe vs Hugh Jackman?

Does anyone think that Alfie Boe was not considered for the role of ValJean because he would had made Rosel Crowe sound even worse than he did ? I don't understand why they picked Jackman over Boe , Boe would had been cheaper to pay , would had performed well since he proved he can act in several plays as well as experience with the character , instead they pick a subpar Broadway singer that they probably had to pay millions more , I think whatever Boe had lacking on acting could had been polished a lot easier than teaching the likes of Crowe and Jackman to sing the part, Anne Hateway was amazing and of course Eponine was great too , Marius much better than Jonas , the Therdaniers were pretty bad compared to the 25ht anniversary just not funny at all.

What do you guys think

I don't think Crowe had anything to do with it. In the scheme of corporate Hollywood, they wanted a "big" name, someone with more of a recognized named in the US. Alfie, unfortunately, is still building his fan base in America. I think the studio was scared stiff to hire him because he's more of an unknown. He's also a bit shorter than they may have wanted for a character that is known to be so strong. It is their loss. They made a huge mistake. They are so scared of Alfie's strength with vocals that they've banned his Les Mis O2 performance of Bring Him Home from Youtube after allowing multiple uploads to be there for over a year. Only now when the viewers and critics are comparing Jackman's poor vocals, especially on BHH, to Alfie's have they suddenly pulled out the copyright argument. It's bunk. I do not believe Alfie lacked anything on acting. Remember, he did this role for several months on the West End in London. He's also gotten excellent reviews for his acting as well as singing in numerous operas over the years. He's an excellent actor. Cameron Macintosh reportedly wanted Alfie for the movie but was out voted. Nothing against Hugh, but the role belonged to Alfie and Universal blew it. Crowe doesn't even compare to someone like Norm Lewis who played Javert both at the O2 and on the West End. It's all quite sad really.

    Alfie Boe Les Miserables

Who knows why Hollywood does what it does! And why now are they removing Les Mis/Alfie vids from YouTube? Apparently Tom Hooper wanted the songs to be non-theatrical, but non-emotional? I really do love the movie, and I need to separate it from the stage play - two competely different animals. Anne Hathaway and Sam Barks are outstanding, and the Barricade Boys (especially Fra) are awesome! I actually imagined Alfie's voice while Hugh Jackman was singing BHH, so I guess it didn't bother me too much. Alfie Boe is my Jean Valjean, and ALWAYS will be!! xx

I've wondered that myself. Crowe was announced as Javert before Jackman was cast. Universal would have had to use much better and stronger voices if Boe had been Valjean, just to "keep up" with him.

I don't think Universal had much faith in the musical to bring the audience in. They wanted name stars to guarantee their box office. So many commenters keep saying the acting was more important here. Then what was the point of adapting a musical? I think they're reacting to the incredible story and visuals. Imagine how much stronger the movie would have been if the singing had matched too?
