2002 ford focus timing belt broke? Engine okay?
I have a 2002 ford focus lx 2.0. Was driving and let off the gas to coast to a stop light. Light turned green so I went to get on the gas but the pedal would not go down. Coasted to the side of the road and quickly shut the car off. My car just hit 140,000 miles and has never had the belt changed. There was no noise no nothing that would give a sign something was wrong. After I turned it off the gas pedal was fine. I tried to turn it back on and it makes a soft cranking sound not up and down or scratchy. The guy who have me a tow at that time also said it sounded like the belt. Since I was coasting and turned it right off is there a chance I could of not bent any valves or anything? It sounded normal and quiet while running like always just wouldn't start after I shut off.
It is Single overhead cam SOHC but i called a local mechanic and he said it's a interferance engine not a non- interfereance so it doesnt matter. I hope he's wrong...

Gates lists the 2.0L SOHC as being an interference engine in one document

and being a non-interference engine in another

However the consensus on some Focus forums is that it's indeed a non-interference engine. So you may have dodged a bullet. Chances are you didn't bend any valves, but I wouldn't have tried to restart the engine. Keep in mind your timing belt should've been replaced years/tens of thousands of miles ago. Timing belts don't give you any warning at all that they are about to fail. That's why they have scheduled replacement intervals.

My 2000 Focus went 105,000 miles before the timing belt broke, $500 and 1 day in the shop to replace the belt. The engine is non-interference so there will be no engine damage if it does brake, however it will leave you stranded on the side of the road.

ford through customer feed back recommends that an owner change their timing belt by the 60,000 mile mark to prevent complete engine failure. I know a guy that refused to take my advice and wound up blowing his engine by 61,565. The pistons hit the valves and shot the engine. A timing chain is recommended at 100,000 miles, however with the use of synthetic oils, this is extended by 100,000 miles making that 200,000 miles.

This question is tricky. In 2002 the Focus came with two versions of the 2.0L 4 cylinder engine: a SOHC version and a DOHC version. If your engine is DOHC that is bad news; if your engine is SOHC you are okay. The second source identifies the LX engine as the SOHC engine, which would free you from the worry of bent valves.
