prison officer interview advice?
I applied for a prison officer position in Aberdeen, and have just been asked to an assessment, which will include an interview, a psychometrics test and a fitness test.
was just wondering if anyone who has been through one of these interviews has any advice on what to expect in each section, and how to get through them?

I can imagine the interview isn't going to be tough, they will probably be more interested in finding out if the job is suitable for you than any "are you good enough for this job" questions.
Psychometrics test are not as bad as they sound. Mostly seeing if your personality is suitable, obviously if you are too soft the jobs not for you. But if your too hard the jobs not for you, as that could cause conflict say. A nice in between. They probably want someone friendly to a degree, you know, thats able to keep their psychological distancing.
They will be most interested in conflict resolution, always talk the path of maturity, no quick to violence solutions, be very clear and verbal. Spraying a dude in the eyes with mace then going in to grab the knife he's holding could get you killed. Instead being verbal and mentioning that if he doesn't put it down you'll be forced to mace him could be critical, that way he knows what to do if he doesn't want to get maced again instead of getting defensive keeping a tight hold of the knife as you would if your eyeballs felt like they were burning into your skull. "I did that because you wouldn't put down the knife, We'll rinse your eyes if you put down the knife, put the knife down" - reward not more punishment - resolution.
You'll probably use tasers that project hooks so distance can be maintained and you can shot without killing them or entering the cell. Tasers render a person completely unable to move for a little while and unlike mace is hard to counter unless they say have use a dinner tray to block the hooks. (some people develop an immunity to mace on purpose - military people)
You need to take charge when an inmate has attacked his cellmate with a knife, first a foremost ask the perpetrator (the one doing the stabbing) to stop if hes still stabbing. call backup and medic and wait for backup then isolate the perpetrator in the corner. Access the victims injuries, checking airways firstly then stop any bleeding, once medic arrives take the victim to the ward under guard. Take the perpetrator to a separate medical ward under guard in case there is any un-reported injury. The victim could of initiated the attack and the perpetrator turns the knife back on him which quite often happens. The perpetrator could be in shock so it is best to make a visual assessment in the medical ward of any injury and not just take his word for it.
All these safety procedures are important, if you rush in alone when they are attacking each other the perpetrator could jump you or even both of them with the victim faking it (cut wrists slightly for blood and knife goes under armpit say).
fitness test speaks for itself, treadmill connected to a heart monitor. Your not a athlete or soldier but "wrestling" with a man shouldn't leave you out of breath because that could lead you to get hurt.

might be worth a watch. Needless to say this is an extreme prison in america not here. The focus here is more on being nice and stuff.

the above link shows a system that the americans have invented to stop stabbings.

You can wear business slacks or a business suit. You want to minimize gender differences. Nothing bright or loud. Dark blue, white or black. Plain shoes like low pumps. I worked in several prisons and forensic units of mental hospitals. We called how to dress (male and female) common sense camouflage.
