This is a complicated decision. Your wife needs to apply for an ITIN number no matter how you file. You could be married filing joint, married filing separate or head of household. If you file joint, then any of your wife's income becomes reportable and maybe taxable and you and your wife must make a formal election to do this.

Bottom line - you need to get help or do a lot of reading to understand this complicated tax situation.

You aren't single. You MUST file either MFS or MFJ.

If she won't agree, you file MFS. If she doesn't have an SSN or ITIN, then you leave the field blank and mail the return in with a note.

If you are not a US citizen or Resident alien, then file 1040NR and put married, other.
