How to teach my puppy not to bite?

She is a lab girl, almost 3 months old. She is the smartest puppy I have met. She is already potty trained, knows to sit, shake, and fetch, and she understands well what no means. However, she will chew the crap out of my hands and feet when she is playing and I just can't get her to stop doing it. I make a loud noise and let her know it hurts and then say no, but she just starts growling and barking back at me instead of stopping. After this she will act rebellious and act up for a while. So should I give her a good smack next time she bites me or what?

All tips are appreciated.

Stop play immediately. If the loud OUCH noises don't work, ignore your puppy. If she is as smart as you say, and most labs are, she will begin to realize that her behavior puts all play and fun time to a stop. Puppies bite, it is normal. It takes awhile to get them to realize that they are not supposed to be doing it. Was she taken from her litter mates before 8 weeks? If so, you have a long road ahead of you. If you smack your puppy, you will be reinforcing fearful and aggressive behavior. That's probably the worst thing you can do.

Hitting is never a good answer for any problem. Your pup is teething, and learning appropriate social interactions. You need to take care of her needs. It will take some work on your part. First, when you are playing with her and she starts to bite, yell 'Ow!' and totally stop giving her attention, whether she barks or whatever. Ignore her. If she continues biting, continue to yell 'Ow' and move away from her. This is how puppies in a litter learn from each other. When one bites too hard, its playmate moves away, which is totally distressing to the dog. In the litter she may keep barking/growling trying to entice her playmate to come back, but generally he will ignore her. She will learn to calm down, then reapproach her playmate for more fun with less biting. This is what you have to do. Yell OW, move away. Do not react to her growling/barking. Ignore her. She will within half and hour come back to you meekly, and at that point go ahead and play some more. If she gets too aggressive, repeat the correction behaviour.

As for teething, make sure you have a variety of chew toys for her, as every dog will have a different preference (as will every baby!). When she chews on her chew toy, praise her! It wont take long for her to understand that chewing on a chew toy is the way to go.

    Good luck!

Best thing is to "startle" them with a loud yelp or "ouch" so she knows she's hurt you, THEN get up, walk away and ignore her. It's like telling her "I won't play with you if you are going to be like that"

then after a few minutes and she's calmed down, play with her again. AS soon as she bites, yelp, get up and walk away. You can also put her in "time out" in her crate.

The other guy's suggestion of a tin can with stones to startle the puppy is a good one too.

The key is consistency. You have to do this EVERY time, and she'll learn eventually.

she probably is teething so you should provide her with good things to chew on.

I'm not so sure a smack will help stop. The problem is teething. There are chew toys you put in the freezer, that might help. I have a Golden and she chewed everything. Me included. It stopped as she grew. Be patient and it will pass, in the mean time, chew toys! They are smart aren't they? Hope that helps

Do what you're doing, but get up, walk away, and ignore her until she is being good.
