Is David Cameron right on the HS2 rail link in the UK?

David Cameron in his latest speech says that Britain needs a high speed rail link the same as other countries but some countries are much bigger than Britain in comparison due to the expanse of land so it is understandable that some countries need this type of high speed transport to cut down on journey times. As as Britain is a smaller country which is less than a thousand miles from Land's End to John O' Groats, do we really need to invest in this type of infrastructure and what do you think are the benefits in the long term?

    I think we could all spend 33Billlion a lot better than a high speed rail link.

    Yes its true that journey times up down country can be tedious, and you're right about the uk being a small country.

    However I do believe having a HS train TO SCOTLAND & the upper THE NORTH AND EAST of England WOULD benefit in the long term prospects of UK plc.

    under the current plans linking London with the Midlands just doesn't cut it in my book.

    all HS2 will do is make the south east of England/London more crowded as ppl further away can travel in a relatively short time to our capital. - in the process forgetting the rest of the country.

    too London centric I believe- has to go all the way to Scotland?

    If the rail link actually covered the whole UK it would make a huge difference, even if its extended to Leeds that will still exclude the entire northern half of the UK.

    At the moment UK transport infrastructure is concentrated around London. That means tourists mostly have to come here via London. Most never venture out to the rest of the country. The same applies to business travellers, and when Scots, for example, want to visit foreign clients or holiday destinations we are usually forced to travel via London, adding hours to the journey and hundreds of extra pounds.

    These are quite literally taxes on the rest of the country which encourage development around London and discourage it elsewhere.

    A truly national hi speed rail network could cut travel time between Glasgow and London from 5 hours to 2 hours and from the north of Scotland the improvements would be even more dramatic. This would make the whole UK hugely more accessible and attractive to tourists and business travellers, and stimulate the whole economy, reducing the disparity between SE England and the rest.

    This is all hypothetical though, because HS2 ignores the entire northern half of the UK, and Wales and SW England.

    No he is never right, the London bureaucracy is bankrupt both financially and morally, endlessly spending money that is not theirs on the infrastructure of England. They need be hauled in front of the international court of justice on a charge of discriminatory spending
