Milk and solids question?
My baby is nearly 6 months old and has been having solids successfully since he was 4 months old. He's increasing the amount of solids eaten at each meal (3 times p/day) - should I be decreasing his milk intake? He is on formula.

Listen to your BABY and your pediatrician before you take too much stock into what anyone else is saying. As long as your baby is tolerating solids well, (no rashes, hives, diarrhea, constipation, etc...), your baby is having plenty of wet and soiled diapers a day, and gaining weight at the rate she/he should be, then you're doing things FINE for your baby. He should definitely be having mostly formula, because that's still his main source of nutrition, even with the 3 meals a day. I also started my son on solids at 4 months. I pretty much stayed with the stages on the Gerber baby food labels (ex: supported sitters, independent sitter, crawling...). Your baby will tell you if he is full after eating a solid meal by refusing a bottle. If he doesn't then let him drink the formula. I think you're doing great with 3 meals a day plus formula (til one year). As he gets older and when you feel he's ready, introduce snacks between meals. Just continue to watch for your sons feeding cues, and if you have further questions call or make an appointment with your pediatrician. Good luck with everything you do. :)

No. In fact, you should be decreasing his solids intake.
He really should be JUST starting solids now (or, if he's not yet 6 months old, he really shouldn't have any yet.) Even if you opted to start early, ONE solid meal a day, offered after a regular milk feed, would be plenty for a baby this age. 3 meals a day is too much.
His formula is the basis of his diet, and solids are 'just for fun.' So offer his usual bottles at the usual times. After ONE (maybe 2) bottle, you can offer a little solid food and let him eat as much as he enjoys.

no, formula should be his main source of nutrition until he's 12 months old. the solids are more for just practice of swallowing solid food. on top of having solids 3 times a day, he should still get his formula every few hours - as much as he wants as often as he wants.
