question about geometry?

If point S is between R and T on a segment, RS = 3x + 5, ST = x – 2 and RT = 39, then RS = ??

    Okay so imagine a line

    R________________S_______________T

    so you do (3x+5) +( x-2)= 39 because RS + ST = RT.

    (4x+3)= 39

    (4x)=36

    x=9

    so subtitute x for 3x+5 which would equal 32. the answer is 32
