Which pronoun to use? I or me?

There are three people in my family. They are my father, my mother and I/me. I'm not sure but I think it should be me (object pronoun after the verb are).

"To be" isn't a transitive verb, so technically it doesn't have an object. It's a copula and has a nominative complement, which should be in the subject case. So "I" is the answer.

But "me" sounds better to the ear for sure, so it depends what you need the sentence for.

Use "I" if you want to be grammatically correct; use "me" if you want to be a normal person. Grammar rule states to use subject pronouns after "be" but no one ever does.

    "Me"

The tip I was always told was to alternately substitute "I" and "Me" in the sentence, and see what works!

Source(s): Taught in the 80s at the UK's best performing State Grammar School... We weren't taught nonsense about 'object pronouns' just what made common sense!! n.b. Most of my fellow pupils have already retired in comfort in their mid-40s! Education nowadays just complicates things, largely because specific measures are used by Federal/Central bodies in SAT scoring (such as "do pupils know what an 'object pronoun' is).
