What would it take for you to stop/start believing in god?

In other words: Atheists, what would need to happen in order for you to believe in a god? Theists, what would make you stop believing in your god?

The ONLY thing that would get me to believe in any god, would be for that god to physically show him/herself to me.

Thomas needed physical touchable proof from Jesus, and so do I.

I was an atheist before I was in clinical death when I was 19. Well, okay, can't say I was an atheist, but I was not spiritual at all at that point. I know what I went through when I had that happen to me and nobody can take that truth away from me. Of course, some may want to tell me that it's still a matter of brain functioning abnormally, blah blah blah...I know better though. I've since known that there is in fact life after death and that's all I needed to know in order to awaken spiritually. I am not religious, and frankly, this experience didn't throw me into a religious state, because I refused to go to any churches or assimilate myself with any religious organizations, groups or dogma. It actually taught me to think for myself. I'm a lot more spiritual as a result of that today, but not in the convenient, mainstream way. I try to work together with science and spiritualism and seek answers in both.

I believed & then thought my son would get well. After he died I kept believing & now many years later I see how stupid it all is. I have prayed asking for help & yet I see others who do things to get what they want are getting those things not because of a belief in God but because they go after what they want & figure out a strategy on how to get it & then do. It is our thinking that manifests what we want & need in life & our luck. Many good people are treated so bad believing in God as a man who has any power over our life is stupid. Then some would say we have free will as their excuse.

I think something would have to physically tweak my brain and hit the belief switch.

Not trying to be funny, but I'm sure the right kind of head injury could do it. Drugs and medications are another possibility.

The more I understand the other side, the more I see that my brain works differently in a very fundamental way.

I've often said that I would abandon Catholicism the very next day after someone proved the church wrong in it's claim to teach with moral infallibility. Simply offer an argument that "out-morals" a church teaching on morality.

What I usually get instead is a denial of morality (right conduct) itself, replaced with a subjective/relative morality.... which can't "out moral" anything.

So there it sits... a pretty simple challenge it would seem... or is it?

I would need something real and tangible that couldn't be explained by a simpler rationale manner.

I'm not an atheist, but a very critical Agnostic. I don't deny that their might be a spiritual world beyond our current understanding. But I don't believe in a single being that created the universe and who sits their judging us, expecting us to pick out of the huge variety of rule books, the correct one, or we will burn in hell.

I no longer understand God in my concepts or in my coronary heart. i understand God in my soul so i'm secure from believing. I no longer have faith. God is. God is the inspiration of each and everything I see and understand and no 'component' can adjust that. Mere thought isn't adequate. that is a stepping stone to get you around the river of existence, to get to the different area. in case you stop and stand on one thought or yet another and severe water comes it is going to bathe you off that rock. Get to the different area the place you're secure from the flood waters of worldly problems.

If you read the history of the martyrs, you will find that there are many cases in which it just wouldn't happen.
