Hypoallergenic dog food?

I have a rescue who is 13 months old and has had an itchy skin condition since we got him at 3 months. After several rounds of treatment and tests we have now completely eliminated parasites or flea allergy.

Vet says next step is to go on a hypoallergenic dry food diet - she says he cannot be allergic to it. However since he's been on it for 4 days his eyes have been running like crazy, which never happened before.

I've heard of success with raw food diets, but don't know enough about it. Why raw food instead of cooked?

I'm very interested in personal experiences, if you've had success with a particular diet.

Raw food diets are difficult to formulate successfully and really shouldn't be attempted by anyone not familiar with the canine nutritional requirements. Also, the American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Animal Hospital Asociation have both issued position statements opposing raw diets. (see DogFancy's Natural Dog, Winter 2013)

Delta Therapy Dog organization has also refused membership to any owner that feeds their dog a raw diet.

All of this is due to the fact that feeding raw can cause many dogs to carry the salmonella bacteria even though not affected by it themselves but can shed it to young children and the elderly.

This is something to take into consideration when trying to decide whether or not to feed raw.

When trying to stay away from kibble that can possibly trigger allergies in a dog prone to food allergies, make sure the food does NOT contain any corn, wheat, soy, by-products or chicken, all known allergy triggers in dogs. That doesn't mean this will clear up a dogs allergies, only that these are the ingredients that often are the cause. Many other things are involved also, and I suggest an elimination diet along with several skin tests to determine exactly what your dog is reacting to. What they find might surprise all of you.

My dogs both had dry skin ,and scratched themselves raw , I tried everything they were put on anti fungal meds for 7 months then on antibiotics (which work immediately but they have to eventually come off or side effects are awful) They stayed on the antibiotic for 2 years, with side effects of tiredness, drooling, and just not feeling right. We spent hundreds of dollars on allergy testing , it was great cause we found out things the dogs were allergic to, like dustMITES , some trees some foods etc. I did the new Nutriscan test for dogs (go to nutriscan and check it out) Nutriscan is a saliva test and easy to do, it told me what I could feed the dog safely but they still itched.. I finally took out my wall to wall carpet and replaced it , bought new furniture allthis cause the reaction inthe blood tests said they were allergic to dustmites and other mites... OH they could not have grains of any kind, not cause theyare allergic to grain, but allergic to mites which are in dog food grains and get ground up with the grain and put in the foods.. I went to a raw diet and now they are not itching... it was a 2 and a half year trip, and I am just 10 days out off the antibiotic with them... my dogs are not itching for the first time in 2.5 yrs off meds. SKin and itching problems are the #1 problem in dogs. The skin is where the toxins try to be released ffrom the dog so any toxic problem shows up in skin or lungs . My dogs also 'sucked' air.. meaning you can see the stomach rise and fall rather quickly ,even when they are at rest. they just werent breathing properly when they had the itching.. I say go to Hare today gone tommorrow and buy some raw ground up meat bone and organs and feed you dogs JUST THAT for about a month. see what happens.... it is expensive but not as expensive as all the vet bills and medications they will be on if you don't clean up the environment and foods for the dogs. Vacuuum often, get some air cleaners (HEPA) The dogs bodys are overloaded with toxins of some sort.. I also changed to a 'free and clear' detergent , do not use softener on anything the dog will touch.. Beware of lilstening to a vet when they recommend long term treatement with antibiotics.... it wil hurt the dog to stay on them longterm. Do not feed vet sold foods.. they have no training in dog nutrition... and never feed a soy allergy food... Dogs can't digest soy long term. Take out all grains from the dogs diet.. not even ONE cookie. but the thing that made the most difference is raw diet, with the enzymes in it.. cooked food kills the some of the nurtients and all the enzymes that the dogs need. I did not feel safe with bones so got the ground bone meat and organ for my dogs. they are 72 lbs each and eat only 1.25lbs of meatboneorgan a day for each dog. their poop is small and well formed easy to clean andif you don't pick it up off the ground it dissapears in a day or two... couldn't ask for more... good luck
