How do you define the terms 'Gnostic' and 'Agnostic'?

I was having a conversation on Facebook with the admin of an Atheist page. They posted a picture (as most of those pages do) that defined Gnostic as "Claims to have Evidence" and Agnostic as "Does not claim to have evidence".

I pointed out that their definition was incorrect - that it is not 'Evidence', but 'Knowledge' that is the key to the definition of Gnostic/Agnostic. They replied saying that in order to have Knowledge, one must also have Evidence. I responded that since there is no evidence either way, then using their 'definition', the terms Gnostic and Agnostic could not be used regarding religion. They started name calling, blah blah, it went on for a while.

When asked, I define myself as a Gnostic Atheist. I feel that it's all a big fiction, and I'm as certain of my choice as it is possible to be. I do not have any doubts, I don't feel the need to sugar coat it, or be wishy washy about it. There is simply no god. To me, that is a 'Gnostic' position, and it threw me when another supposed 'atheist' decided to say that I would have to present 'evidence' to allow me to have that position.

What do you think? Does Gnostic/Agnostic refer to/require 'Claiming/Not Claiming to have Evidence'?

I believe their definition is incorrect.

In particular since many religious people claim to know while simultaneously admitting they have no evidence. Some people only claim to know something if they have evidence, but obviously not everyone.

In fact, the original Gnostic Christians (a diverse group if there ever was one) claimed mostly to have "secret" knowledge. Which by definition they could provide no evidence for.

'Gnostic' means 'with knowledge.' Traditionally, this has been a term used to describe people (mostly but not entirely Christians) who claim a knowledge derived from an individual experience -- like a personal vision or initiation that impacted their psyche.

Agnostic (which really isn't connected to Gnostic) means someone who says that they do not have knowledge of God(s), and as a result cannot ally themselves with any particular religion or belief, because they have not seen evidence or have not experienced a meaningful connection to any religion/spiritual path.

But it's all just a bunch of labels...your personal label seems fine to me. It's just that when you call yourself 'Gnostic,' MANY people will immediately assume you're talking about the actual Gnostic religious movement.

Well knowledge was described by Pluto as "justified true belief." Don't you need evidence to justify something? so yea i think to be Gnostic requires you to have evidence for your knowledge. But I'm sure there can be subsets of Gnosticism that don't require evidence, It can be more of a personal thing I believe.

But I think agnostics do not claim to have evidence for a God because they believe that it is impossible at the time to have evidence or prove the existence of God.

Actually "Gnostic" comes from the Greek work "gnosis" which means knowledge. Gnosticism is a form of Christianity in which the adherents believe that knowledge of one's spiritual nature is the key to salvation rather than good deeds and repentance from sin. They focus on the lessons Christ gave us rather than his crucifixion. They also believe that this universe was not created by the true God but a sort of mad lesser god, a demiurge. They believe this world is flawed because the creator is flawed.

    The Second Death

Hear it, all ye ends of the earth —all ye priests, all ye sinners, and all men. Repent! Repent! Obey the gospel. Turn to God; for your religion won’t save you, and you will be damned. I do not say how long. There have been remarks made concerning all men being redeemed from hell; but I say that those who sin against the Holy Ghost cannot be forgiven in this world or in the world to come; they shall die the second death. Those who commit the unpardonable sin are doomed to Gnolom—to dwell in hell, worlds without end. As they concocted scenes of bloodshed in this world, so they shall rise to that resurrection which is as the lake of fire and brimstone. Some shall rise to the everlasting burnings of God; for God dwells in everlasting burnings and some shall rise to the damnation of their own filthiness, which is as exquisite a torment as the lake of fire and brimstone.
