What's the XM stand for in things like..?

The XM2010 and XM16E1? I doubt it stands for Xylophone Muncher, so what does it stand for? Or is it just a military designation or something?

    Usually it's something that is either in development, testing, or hasn't been formally adopted yet.

    M on its own is also (usually) model.
