How did the groundhog get the job of predicting the arrival of spring?

The groundhog apparently didn't see his shadow yesterday, so we should have an early spring. Based on your memory, how accurate is that likely to be?

Im not sure how accurate a groundhog is at predicting weather. but then again i think the weatherman isn't that accurate either. being i looked outside this morning and seen it snowed last night again, i will add i know why that groundhog looks angry when its handler picks it up. it was hibernating and was mad for being woken up, we have groundhogs where i live and never see them until spring,

He probably got the job when some clever folks in Punxatawny, PA dreamed up an incredible public relations story. The way it works is, if the groundhog sees his shadow, we get six more weeks of winter. If he doesn't, we only have a month and a half left in winter. LOL There used to be a woodchuck (groundhog) that lived under our house trailer and the only thing he was good at predicting was knowing when to scurry around and scare the cr*p out of me.

As I remember, the groundhog inherited the job when then pidgin toed whorf became extinct. He has been pretty accurate ever since, the 1st day of spring coming on or around the 20th of March, every year since he got the job.

Woody the groundhog at our local nature center didn't see her shadow but I don't think a rodent is any better at forecasting than the talking heads on the TV are.

  • I guess because the groundhog only comes out when it gets warm....*snicker*.

But I don't believe in him because I don't live in PA. He predicted it for them not for where I live. But always hope he is right when it come to an early spring!!!

    I can't believe your avatar.....hmmmm

YAY! Way to go Groundhog! I'm so tired of this frigid weather, I can't wait to warm up my bones!

I believe it's pretty accurate. :) At least that's the way I remember them to be.

Why the groundhog? Dunno - but he is right no oftener than a flipped coin would be.
