What discomfort should I expect with new ab workouts?

After seeing a personal trainer I was told that I should think about strength and resistance training. So I've been doing the recommended exercises and researching others that I should try. I have a four week plan that switches up the exercises so it always keeps my body guessing. Anyway, today was my rest day and I noticed how stiff and weird my abdomen felt. Is it supposed to feel weird or did I over do it? Just a bit of history: I use a kettlebell and do about 3-4 sets of 12 reps. I'm trying to lose about 10 pounds, I'm a vegetarian and have a pretty strict eating schedule.

Any help would be great, thanks!

Update:

Planet X: thanks, I do try to keep a lot of protein in my diet, for example my lunch is a garden salad, protein shake (25g of protein), and carrots with water

That is normal, just try to have protein and potassium in your diet.
