Why aren't states like Florida,Louisiana, and South Carolina densely crowded like California?

I always wondered about that.

Florida, South Carolina, and Louisiana have amazing weather like California and have access to really nice beaches.

But if you look at California you see San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Jose which are all pretty big cities(close to a million or more than a million people).

But if you look at cities in Florida, Miami doesn't come even close to California's big cities. New Orleans doesn't also compare. Nor does Charleston. Yet, hell, they have amazing climates year around as well

Update:

DENSELY means people per square mile...not total population...of course, California is a much bigger state landwise so it can support a larger population as a result.

California was really a popular place to live especially from 1920 until about 1950, when people built houses on the beach (Malibu) the weather was always nice (earthquakes not so good) and it was the place "swimming pools and movie stars". Film studios were started and that brought in jobs, cinema was seen as the in thing, especially since people went to the theater to get the news before a picture show. I think it was more the lure of the Golden Age of Hollywood more than anything, people came from all over to become famous. Once the studios like United Artists (founded by Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford) Warner Bros. went in, Southern California was a boom town area basically.

Nearly all of California is farms, there are huge areas where nearly nobody lives.

That's why California is often very conservative, and elects many Republican Governors.
