Why do Police Helicopter Pilots carry a Firearm?

Why do Police Helicopter Pilots carry a firearm? Is for that slim chance that they will have to land and possibly apprehend a suspect or is standard issue?

    Because police officers carry sidearms. the possibility does exist that they must land and will need weapons. They are standard issue. The police choppers are not commercial aircraft, so the no firearms rule does not apply.
