do not drink energy drinks at anytime.
They are illegal at some races.
they contain huge amounts of caffeine and sugar, and are very bad and some even dangerous.

No one, runner or not, should never drink energy drinks. Those things are incredibly damaging to your health. Plus if you think you should be using supplements for energy you have a very wrong idea about how to maintain a proper diet. Even elite runners than run 100 miles per week don't abuse energy supplements. They simply eat right.
If you have energy problems, you don't have a proper diet. You need to change your diet, not damage your heart with energy drinks.
You should also do your best to avoid any gels or things like that as well.

None.
They're mainly caffeine and sugar. Some events will ban you for the excess caffeine. And as far as running goes, the artificial excess heart rate from them will simply give your heart less room until it maxes out, and increase your blood pressure... so they'll work against you, and you'll actually tire faster when running. You'd get more out of taking a multivitamin with a glass of orange juice in the morning.

WATER!!! and juice, but not before running. A little bit watered down gatorade is okay, but all in all....
WATER is your friend!
