Citroën Xsara SX: Front windscreen wipers inoperational?
Hi,
Vehicle:
Citroën Xsara SX, Petrol, Manual, UK, Y registration (2001).
Symptoms:
Front wipers inoperational. The condition of the blades and arms are good.
Notes:
[*] No service manual, owner's manual, Haynes manual, fusebox layout, etc. Just me and a torch.
[*] The rear wash/wipe is working.
[*] I do not know which fuse(s) to check, if anybody does this would be very helpful. The front washers are operating fine, so if the motor and washers are on the same fuse, this is moot.
[*] I have no idea how to access and check the front wiper motor.
I'm no expert, but I have replaced alternators and wired accessories in the past, I'll do my best to look into anything to help. It's an old car, and obviously things fail over time. I have removed the steering column cover but all wires look as new.
Thanks for your time,
Bob
Okay, since neither of you are suggesting a fuse problem, I will start trying to get to the wiper motor. Thanks again for your time (=
I live in a small town on the edge of nowhere, nearest city stores are two bus rides away. We have local stores and a tiny library, but barely anything opens for long (if at all) on the weekend, definitely not the library.
I have changed a few fuses out of boredom and I hear a click from the fuse box whenever I change the wiper setting (relay firing perhaps?) If the motor could have a separate fuse, I could keep going on this route, but I don't have many spare fuses.
I've attempted to get to the motor, but I cannot remove the wiper arms; the nuts come off easily enough, but the arms themselves won't pull or unscrew...
It's in the mechanic's den now. As far as I could tell, it's not a stalk, fuse, or relay problem, which leaves wiring and motor as suspect. Thanks for all of the responses (=
Mechanic says the computer needs rebuilding, to the tune of £300

There could be more than one fuse panel. The motor would probably have its own fuse.
One somewhere on the driver's side, one in the engine compartment, and one possibly on the passenger side?
Do you have a library around that might have a manual on the shelf? Have you asked at any parts stores, like Halford's?

Damn French rubbish - I have 37 year old German Opels on their original wiper motors, never had a problem. Anyway, you have no spare fuses, but you CAN remove each one and check it hasn't blown. If it has, remove another of the same rating from another slot, use it to replace the blown one, (note down on paper what you are taking from where) and try your wipers - if it blows again immediately, then you know you have a problem with the switch/wiring/motor on the wiper circuit.
My local pound shops sell 30 fuses for 1 pound, you should never be without them. Removing a motor is all well and good, but are YOU capable of testing/fixing it, or have you sourced a spare?

Im guessing the motor itself is behind the dash like a lot of cars. you can go down to a parts store and ask them if they have a diagram that may show you where it is. Or go talk to a garage that works on those cars they already know and Im sure its a pain. The last one I did went to my mechanic the transmission is for the wipers should be behind the grill behind the hood there may be a grate you can look through to see if the wipers are trying to move. If you dont hear the switch turn on the motor it could be a switch you need to test it if you can

Have you checked your wiper motor out and the wiring to it? That is where I would start with.
