Short story / reading extract recommendations?

I need to read a piece of literature in an interpretative way - I have around 8 minutes to read it, which means my piece should be between 1400 - 2000 words long. I want a piece that preferably:

- Gives some social commentary

- Is shocking and/or unexpected

- Features very relatable protagonists

- Is a good piece of literature

- Shows some character growth and/or seeks to change the reader

I was going to do The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, but it was too long; dooes anyone have any other suggestions? (If you're recommending a book / novel, can you point towards a section in particular I should start looking for?) Thanks in advance!
