Paradox
My name is definitely not Paradox. I see no reason for anyone to know my real name, and although my profile pic may change a lot, just know it is still me. I love reading... writing... reading... drawing... reading.... yea that's pretty much it. If you want to add me please give me a shout out first. I'll happily answer any questions you may have about life, relationships, or anything in general, although I may not know much of the trivia/technical stuff/facts and figures. If I DO answer a question I will usually answer in full, so... ya.
What to do about an overprotective dad?
Yes this sounds like the typical teenager girl angst stuff, hear me out first please though.
I know my dad loves me. In his own way. I feel like he switches his attention on and off his family, he's very invested in his work - not that I blame him, it's just sort of the way I've been brought up. All my life I've had a sort of loving but distant relationship with my dad, which works best when we're not talking about our own lives but about something sufficiently intellectual and in short, spread out, healthy doses. He's quite a typical businessman type, with the sort of grandstanding and alpha male attitude that extends to family life in many ways. He's also really stubborn which is a problem waiting to occur, as I am also very, very stubborn; but until recently we've sort of side stepped this issue, mainly since I've been more or less willing to agree with him until now for the sake of keeping the peace.
Recently, I think two things have happened: 1) I suddenly grew up (Wow 16th birthday coming up in a few months.. how did that happen?), and 2) He's suddenly gone through a panic attack and realizes that he wants to spend more time with his family. So being an asian dad he gets very overprotective about things like social meetings (He has blatantly stalked me / showed up unexpectedly when I've hung out watching movies with friends, or went to have dinner etc.). We've had the whole underage drinking talk, and yes we've had the sex talk, we've pretty much laid down ground rules there, but whenever I ACTUALLY go out he tends to freak out, call for me at 11, then rush me home asap while not talking to me at all on the ride back. I've tried addressing the problems we have, but in the heat of the moment when we try to talk things out he tells me that I "don't understand what it's like to be a father" and shushes me (obviously I don't understand what it's like to be a father, I'll concede that) and talks (almost literally) in a stream of chinese idioms, and so the conversation never happens until later, where we have a big blowout and then we both apologize to each other and everything repeats once again later.
I think the problem comes down to the fact that, although he's such a great person he's no longer my role model for everything, I've grown out of that, but he hasn't really, and he still thinks that I should follow his path in everything, despite the fact that we actually have really differing interests / fields of passion, and ultimately I simply can't continue a charade of being the perfect asian daughter, I feel like I will really regret not making use of my time now until I get old, and I'm still making my way through the world, I want to be able to experience that without hurting my dad.
So ultimately all that comes down to: How can I convince my dad to let me live my own life / make my own mistakes, and to talk to me about all of the above without it coming to a blowout that will hurt both of us? Help everyone :/ I have no idea what to do.
3 AnswersFamily8 years agoSAT scores? (Let's commiserate / celebrate together!)?
So. That dreaded period has arrived (scores are out guys), and... I scored waayy off target so I'm kind of pissed at myself :P Other than that, what did other people score? Also, to those SAT veterans out there, any advice for us neophytes? (SAT vocab.... :'( curse you SAT)
Target score was 2250+
Reality (composite) = 2130
Reading: 730
Maths: 710
Writing: 690, Essay score: 9
So... my writing kind of sucked, given that it's supposed to be my strongest point :P I think it might have been exam jitters, my essays are usually 10/11s, so I'm not terribly sure what went wrong there, I remember being very nervous at the beginning... But I still did pretty badly given my usual performance :-/ Hope to do better next time!
What did you guys get? Want to swap SAT sob / success stories? Any goals / advice on how to improve?
4 AnswersStandards & Testing8 years agoShort story / reading extract recommendations?
I need to read a piece of literature in an interpretative way - I have around 8 minutes to read it, which means my piece should be between 1400 - 2000 words long. I want a piece that preferably:
- Gives some social commentary
- Is shocking and/or unexpected
- Features very relatable protagonists
- Is a good piece of literature
- Shows some character growth and/or seeks to change the reader
I was going to do The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, but it was too long; dooes anyone have any other suggestions? (If you're recommending a book / novel, can you point towards a section in particular I should start looking for?) Thanks in advance!

2 AnswersBooks & Authors8 years agoWHY are we forced to learn how to play the recorder when in primary school?
It seems pretty pointless. The recorder is not exactly an instrument you can create a professional career around. It doesn't necessarily teach any valuable skills when you transfer to the flute / clarinet either, as I sadly found out. Surely there are better ways to teach music appreciation than making us all play hot cross buns (this seems to be a semi-universal thing across at least a LOT of UK / US schools).
So why?
12 AnswersOther - Music8 years agoOne world problem you want to solve?
If I gave you one wish, but you had to use it to solve one problem in the world, what would your world problem be? Be as altruistic as possible! :) Also, be as specific as possible - so not like 'world suffering' please; the small steps that lead to world suffering, so solvable things :)
Mine would be to do with the human rights abuses that happen in legal justice systems, so like extraordinary rendition, etc. What's yours?

7 AnswersOther - Politics & Government8 years agoIntrovert at extrovert school? (United World College school)?
This is a little socially awkward question for any self-respecting teenager to ask, but anyway, I hope someone can help:
I'm planning to apply for a United World College school soon, and while I think i have a reasonable chance of getting in, I'm not sure whether or not I should go if I do get in. One of the main reasons is because UWCs tend to be filled with happy, warm-hearted extroverts, and while I am usually happy and warm-hearted, I am definitely NOT an extrovert.
For those of you who don't know. UWCs are boarding schools, which have a huge emphasis on learning outside of the classroom, as well as engaging activities inside the classroom. Coupled with a rigorous workload on the IB, that is a heck load of bonding to do! Let me make it clear, I'm NOT an extrovert. If I went to a UWC, I would have to share a room with 3 other people, and I... like my privacy :-/
Plus, the UWC I'm considering is kind of a party / let's get drunk and have sex kind of school as well, even though that's against school policy.. but yeah, it has a wild party life. I am not a party person. Really.
Has anyone been through this at any time, i.e. gone to a boarding school and lived in a dorm / been surrounded by extroverts?
Thanks a lot guys :)
1 AnswerFriends9 years agoHow can we get rid of all the stupid political questions on Y!A right now?
...Because I don't know about you, but these kind of questions:
1) Annoy me a LOT,
2) Seem to be more like propaganda campaigns than genuine questions, and
3) Aren't often grounded in reality.
I mean this as a serious question: How could we as a community get rid of stupid, stupid non-questioning questions on the internet? (Hmm I'll leave the premise of this question and it's ethical roots up to consideration as well) The spirit of asking is supposed to be at least somewhat open-minded. Certain PEOPLE have degraded this characteristic and it's a little upsetting.
Points are awarded for:
- Competence in answering the question.
- Open-mindedness concerning both sides of the story (I really don't mind if you disagree with me. As long as you provide solid reasons, and aren't afraid to defend yourself)
- The lack of empty-complaint paragraphs.
6 AnswersPolitics9 years agoAP Tips - Self Study?
Hi I've posted this question a lot recently, and I'm going to rephrase this: I come from a school with minimal background in AP, and I'm pretty sure they're not going to help me with my studies. I'm a going-to-be- sophomore, planning to self study my way through AP Comparative Govt and Politics, as well as AP World History while doing IGCSEs.
I don't know anything about AP right now - I would really appreciate it if someone told me how hard I'd have to work to self study through it, what I should be doing to prep etc. Maybe some specifics - Is there a guideline to writing the essays? Is there a marking rubric? Also, if anyone could point me to some resources to help me, I would be really grateful.
Remember - I don't have a class to help me, and where I live I don't think many centers offer classes. So how do I pull this one off? Help please please please (If I'm doing this I'm not willing to settle for anything below 5)
Thanks in advance!
2 AnswersStandards & Testing9 years agoAP Tips? (World History + Comparative Polisci)?
I'm going into my sophomore year and planning to self study for two AP exams the coming year: AP Comparative Govt and Politics, and AP World History.
My school uses the IB system so I don't really know anything about AP, and I was hoping for some general or specific tips:
- How long should I study for the two tests?
- How should I study (Any recommendations of textbooks, good resources..?)?
- What things are hardest on AP tests generally?
- What are the general expected grades for AP? <-- I'm a pretty good student, I catch on quickly in school (I hope :P), I've taken 3 years worth of general history classes in middle school, just got back from studying Legal Studies in EPGY Stanford summer camp, but no real previous experience with PoliSci... What grades can I expect? I'm willing to work hard.
- How important is AP? (How do unis see it etc.)
- Specifically for AP Polisci and History: For those of you who have taken either or both of these two tests, how hard are they? What things should I look out for?
And anything else you'd like to throw in there would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

2 AnswersHomework Help9 years agoTo Sydney-ans / students from the University of Technology Sydney - Which is the better faculty?
I'm planning to go to Sydney during the summer, and my dad (technically) has a job at UTS, so I want to get an internship there. I'm 14 (Grade 9 / Year 10), and I'm considering either the Arts and Social Sciences faculty or the Law faculty. I think I have decent credentials for both, allowing for age. I'm wavering towards applying for the Arts and Social Sciences faculty, but if UTS has a really strong law faculty I might apply there instead.
So some questions:
1) Do the two aforementioned faculties offer summer internships to 14 year olds? If it helps, I have an Australian passport, although I don't study in Australia.
2) Which is the stronger faculty / which faculty will offer more experience to interns?
3) Alternatively, if UTS doesn't offer internships, are there any other easily accessible universities in Sydney that offer similar internships in similar faculties? The closer to Fairfield by train, the better, although I will allow for especially extraordinary courses, if there are any.
Thanks all!

1 AnswerSydney9 years agoBloated stomach while sick?
I've been pretty sick with a cold for a while now, and I keep on getting stomach aches (I got my period today, which may be part of the reason, but.. still), and I've noticed that my stomach is really bloated.
It's definitely not because I've been eating too much - I actually eat less now, because whenever I eat I'm scared I might puke it up or diarrhea it out (I had pretty bad bouts of diarrhea a few days ago). I'm on antibiotics now, but they don't seem to be working, and it seems like there's a lot of gas / water inside my stomach.
This doesn't usually happen when I'm sick - I usually lose my appetite and get thinner. But recently I feel really bloated, ALL the time. Does anyone know why?
And no, I'm not pregnant. Yes, I'm sure.
5 AnswersOther - Health9 years agoHow to boost productivity during day time?
Like most high schoolers, I tend to put things off - a lot. If a task isn't interesting, I just don't want to do it in the day time, and I end up rushing everything at night. This is a really big problem for me, because then I hand in sub-standard homework and feel bad about it. But the thing is, I really can't motivate myself to do any work during the day, especially when I know that I could finish it off at night instead.
I end up playing really boring games or watching videos I know I'm not really interested in, and it's frustrating because I'd much rather be doing productive things, but I just can't bring myself to turn Facebook off.
To all disciplined people out there, how do you do it? :-/ It seems almost as if some people in the world have self control, and anyone who doesn't have that is stuck. Help!
4 AnswersPsychology9 years agoWhat is logic and how does it work?
Here's my problem (which seems stupid and may or may not be stupid): I don't know what logic is.
Or rather, I don't know why logic 'works'.
Logic is the underlying principle behind everything, right? All our justifications are based on logic. Every time you try to prove something, or have an opinion about something, you use logic. Indigenous peoples in remote areas are logical, in one way or another, even if they contentions they bring seem different from the contentions we have.
And yet, no one knows WHY logic works. And it seems circular to prove logic works... using logic. I'm not sure if this is a question that can be answered anymore, or if it... simply is.
So to start off, what are the origins of logic? Why does it work? Did it ever develop, or was it 'just there'? I would love it if someone could start me off on this journey, and I'm determined to keep on going until I reach a conclusion.
Thanks all!
