    What is an unexamined life?

It is a life where one does not think for oneself. For example, most people are consumers trained by copywriters who are paid large sums by companies to brainwash and hook people. Most people will consider their country as superior to other countries wwithout knowing much about them. Most people will consider their religion as the true one...and so on. These are signs of an unexamined life.

Furthermore, most people treat professionals as gods. For example, when a person falls sick, he will seek out the advice of his favorite doctors. The majority of people stick to one way of treating disease.

What is the examined life then?

When you don't make an effort to apply lateral thinking and explore viable alternatives, you are leading an unexamined life.

The examined life is one in which the why? question is asked in every aspect of life: Why should I not change profession when it is not working for me? Why should I not change my surname when it sounds so offensive to me? Why should I stick to the religion I was born in?

The other questions that follow the why? question are how, where, when, what, and who. You will begin the examined life when you start asking questions, even the taboo ones.

For example, if you are a Christian, you believe that the church holds all the answers to your questions in life including health, the end of the world and resurrection. You accept whatever your favorite preacher says. If you ask no question (e.g. Why do you think your interpretation of biblical verses is truthful?), then you live an unexamined life.

Have you asked why you should follow what the preacher says?

You lead an unexamined life when you think that the partisan American approach to politics is the best way to run a country. A person who examines global politics of all the two hundred countries will discover that a bipartisan approach based on economics, track record, innovation, meritocracy, and soft authoritarianism is superior to the partisan counter-productive approach to running a country.

For example, a soft authoritarian approach to gun ownership would have prevented some of the massacres in schools and public places in the United States.

You lead an unexamined life when you put some single criterion such as fame or fortune as the sign of a successful life.

Because information and technology are almost limitless, we cannot comprehend even 1% of them. So how can we close our mind to new ideas and new ways of living our life?

Reality has so many facets that a complimentary and eclectic approach to all aspects of living appear, to me, a superior way of life, as proposed by Socrates.

To do that, in my opinion, you need to distill the enriching aspects of religion, philosophy, science, the various professions, arts, and the humanities and apply them to your life as the master and not a slave or a member of a herd.

For example, instead of spending so much time commuting to and from religious buildings, why not boil down the religion into a few fundamental principles. Christianity, for example, can be boiled down to two principles: To believe in and follow the ethics of a benevolent God and to be fair to your neighbors. The rest are far less important. If a person who says he is a Christian does not practice these two principles, he is just a church goer and a hypocrite. He will most probably be an unauthentic person who will cheat on his income tax, and quarrel with another church goer on parking problems and so on. That's an unexamined life.

Beyond getting the views, perspectives, and experiences of others, you must exercise critical thinking to ensure that you are the one making the decisons, for example, to select those creative ideas that suits your particular talents, temperament, values, and aspirations. That is the kind of examined life worth living, don't you think so?

you at the instant are not interior the incorrect in any respect. you have been way too polite and beneficiant and are truly bending over backwards for somebody who's a egocentric bit*h and bridezilla. it is truly uncomplicated in weddings. they surely deliver out the worst in many, lots of people who're so self-based and could have the spotlight. My maid of honor subsidized out of my wedding ceremony a week in the previous without caution. Her maid of honor did an analogous component to her and that i additionally became un-invited and then re-invited to the marriage as a bridesmaid. Alot of brides think of a marriage is a attractiveness contest and the greater you spend the better. You and your fiancee have your heads on on the instant and have a large danger at succeeding. attempt to step lower back from all of the drama and not seek advice from her for a month. supply it it sluggish to omit. on the linked fee she's going, she's not likely to have all and sundry left to speak to by ability of the time her wedding ceremony comes around and in case you opt for to, you're able to slip top lower back into your 10 3 hundred and sixty 5 days friendship/superb pal/moh subject. besides the shown fact that, I grant you with a caution that anybody who treats you that badly became by no ability truly your superb pal interior the 1st place. you're able to do better.

The being that cannot reflect upon its own nature is no better than a stone which can only react to external circumstances.

The ability to reflect upon oneself, to ask questions about what is true, the ability to do philosophy; is the hallmark of a being who can attain something more than just being a reactive zombie.

  • exactly what it says. recognizing that you know nothing (recognizing your own ignorance) is the beginning of gaining knowledge. and through gaining knowledge, you examine the virtues of your life. Socrates held virtues of life very high and said 'tending to your own virtues (tending to your soul), is one of the main purposes of life.
