Why are so many bands mislabeled by ignorant fans?

I mean I know a lot of people say they listen to screamo or punk and they show me some Metalcore or Deathcore :\

They're not the same. And what's up with this obsession of being brutal and hardcore?

Hahaha I know the feeling. Fans want to feel cool by saying yeah I listen to metalcore and its really some emo ****. Oh yeah I'm tuff! I listen to hardcore like suicide silence..or I listen to punk like paramour...what??? Go out to a real hardcore show like Agnostic Front and see if your so tuff in the pit then.. Don't lable something its not just so you feel cool about yourself. either you listen to the real stuff or you don't...don't look stupid

As for being brutal? Whats so brutal about your snakebites and tight pants hahah

People like to be as edgy as possible because they think it makes them unique and artistically dark, and people aren't always big on the technical side of music and probably couldn't distinguish genres that sound similar. For example, a lot of deadmau5 fans call deadmau5 dubstep or techno when he really does a variety different EDM genres. It doesn't mean they aren't true fans or that they appreciate the music less than those who can identify music genres off the bat. All it means is they are probably misinformed or just base their knowledge on assumptions. Sure it is irritating when people merge together screamo and death metal, but you can't expect everyone to be musical geniuses. All that matters is that everyone enjoys their music.

It's because there's so many genres and sub genres that people get really confused. They also don't bother to look up what the actual genre they like is called. Or what genre the bands they're listening to fall under. Most people don't take the time to learn about the music they're listening to {discluding lyrics and instruments, etc.} Let's face it, unless you take the time to learn about music or get lucky and have friends/family who can tell you the correct terminology, most people are just gonna get it wrong. I'm sure I'm one of those people lol. But I'm trying to learn.

Part of the problem is that some people don't know enough about the band to consider themselves fans. I'd blame the fact that itunes lets you pick and choose what songs you want rather than buying the whole album.
