    24 = 2x + x

    24 = 3x

    24 / 3 = x

    8 = x

    Therefore,

    first number = 8, second number = 16

    2) 38 = x - 6 + x

    38 = 2x - 6

    32 = 2x

    32 / 2 = x

    16 = x

    So, 16 = first number; second number = 22

    1) Whenever a word problem says "one number is twice the other number and they add up to __" always divide by 3! So 24 /3 = 8. Then add two of the 8's together to get 16. 16 is twice as much as 8 and they add up to 24!

    Answer: 8 and 16

    2) First divide 38 by 2 to get 19. Then subtract 6 from one of the 19s to get 13 and add it to the other 19 to get 25.

    Answer: 13 and 25
