I have a few questions on how to care for a puppy?

I asked a similar question earlier, so for more information on my situation you can look at my other question.

I have decided to keep my friend that passed away's puppy. I have already had him for 1 week, I have never owned a dog before so I am trying to research and figure everything out.

Right now he is eating "iams" puppy food, what he ate when my friend had him. I have a few questions though, he is a Boxer puppy and is I think 7-10 weeks old.

What is the best dog food out there?

How much exercise does he need now and when he is older?

What is the best way to exercise a dog?

Should I enter him into puppy classes?

How much will everything cost in the beginning and with ongoing vet bills and such?

What is the best kind of Collar/Harness/Leash?

When is the best time to get him neutered or should I?

And just some small questions-

What is the best kind of Shampoo/Brushes for him?

Does his breed require special grooming?

What kind of crate should I get for him? How do I use it and what size?

How do I potty train him?

When will he be able to hold his bladder all night long?

And will he be alright if he is left alone all night? I work a night shift.

I am sorry if that is too many questions, you don't have to answer them all. You can pick and choose the ones you are knowledgeable in.

And the last question, what should I name him??

Thank you so much for reading and answering. I truly appreciate any help I can get.

Update:

Oh, here is a picture of him,

http://www.flickr.com/photos/93172209@N06/84694248...

what would you name a puppy that looked like that? He is sweet, gentle, but loves ice cubes :)

Update 2:

He is a male.

thanks for the answers so far everyone!

Best dog food: Well its different for every dog, just like people. Take him to the vet and see what your vet recommends for you to feed him, that's the best way to find out.

Exercise: Well right now, you shouldn't take the puppy out for walks in a public place where other dogs are until he has had all of his needles. Without those needles he can easily pick up deadly diseases like parvo. When he is old enough, you need to walk your dog at least twice a day for 45 minutes at the least. The best way to exercise them is taking them out for walks or jogs. As a substitute for a walk if you are too busy, you can buy a treadmill and then look up videos on how to get him to walk on it at an acceptable speed. but the treadmill can't be used as a full time walk replacement.

Classes: Puppy classes are always a good idea, like obedience. It teaches the basic commands and teaches you as an owner how to deal with any problems you may have or how to handle him properly. Plus, the classes are fun for both dog and owner!

Costs: Vet bills are usually very expensive at the beginning of owning a puppy, all the needles and such. It will probably add up to several hundred dollars at the end of the year, it really depends on where you live in the world I suppose. But don't think you can skip out on the vet check ups because of the cost, because that is irresponsible and if you aren't willing to pay, you need to give up the puppy to people who can afford him.

The best kind of leash and collar are the nylon ones you can buy at a pet store for like 5 dollars. They are strong and durable, plus easy to clean (depending on what color you get c; )

And neutering, YES you need to get him neutered. Your vet will tell you when to bring him in for it if you ask him. Most people get their dog neutered between 6 months to a year old. Neutering will help you in so many ways. A dog that is not neutered will most likely be more aggressive and dominant, and they will roam and run off more. not too mention he will be marking his territory all over your house and yard a lot more than he would if he was neutered. So yes to neutering.

Shampoo&Brushes: Once again, you can go to your vet with this question. Some vets will recommend a certain shampoo for a dog. Or you can go to your pet store and buy some short hair dog shampoo. And as for a brush, just a soft bristled brush will do the the trick. Since he is a short hair, no his breed doesn't require special grooming.

This kind of dog cage is the best one to buy: https://www.google.ca/search?q=metal+dog+crate&oe=...

For potty training, you can buy some "pee mats" for your floor but you can't use them forever. You need to constantly be taking him outside to do his business, like right after he wakes up, after he eats a lot or drinks, or after playtime. Praise him when he goes outside to pee.

Lock him in his crate at night so he can't go to the bathroom during the night. Get up early and take him outside to pee in the morning and right before you lock him up for the night. Put a comfy blanket in the cage along with some toys so he won't be bored or scared. He might be scared being alone at night, and he may whine and bark. You could get someone to "dog sit" for you if you live in a place where his barking will upset neighbors. He will eventually grow out of this and learn to be calm until you come home.

    You could name him;

    -colby

    -Jack

    -Winston

    -Ace

    -Jojo

I don't know about names, you could just google a bunch of names. And also a good thing for you to do is to do a lot of research on basic dog care and imformation on his breed.

    good luck!

First off Im sorry to hear about your friend.

And the puppy is so cute.

A few name ideas could be - Rocky - Bronx - Taz ?

The best dog food is the one that ISNT coloured. Just plain brown coloured. The coloured ones (red, yellow etc.) have added stuff which isn't so good.

Its good to buy Wet Food mixers and mix it with the dry food. Start with a mug for breakfast and dinner.

Best way to exercise is take him for walks (if he pulls buy a harness) also, train him from an early age. Start with puppy pads and move them closer to the door. Everytime he pees say "pee pee" and when you take him out say "do pee pee". He'll soon understand.

Once he is well trained you can take him to the fields and play catch. GET HIM MICROCHIPPED - £10-£15 but so worth it!

Puppy classes will help with the basics. Its all about teaching from an early age.

Get him neutered soon as possible. It protects him from that horrible C word.

Vet prices vary. Ring up 3-4 different surgiers to enquiry. He needs a regular check up and that usually costs £30 ish.

Best harness/collar - go to Pets at home. They'll help you try them on and find whats best for him.

Buy puppy shampoo to begin with and a soft dog brush, brush regualary and after washing.

He wont hold his bladder all night if he is a puppy - that's what puppy pads are for.

He'll be alright at night, if you leave a TV on for sound, a comfy bed and toys.

Most important of all, give him lots of cuddles and love.

i would say the best way to exercise a dog is to walk him in a park, play with toys, or let him hang around other puppies.(they have a lot of energy)

also since you didnt put his gender or i just didnt see it but i would say for a boy : Rebel or a girl:jasmine, precious, or princess

    good luck!!! :)

Source(s): i did that on my own
