Playful pup not getting enough exercise?
I have a 4 month old Boxer puppy that will not settle down. He had all of his puppy shots and just one week ago finished them so I have just started letting him down on the ground in public, for the 2 months I have had him I have been carrying him *everywhere*, to the park, vet, and just to walk around and letting people pet him.
I have a large fenced backyard and I let him play there for a few hours a day, even though most of the time he just layed around chewing on him bone. I heard it is bad to over-exercise puppies and so I have been careful, I take him on 10-20 minute walks daily and play with him for about 30 minutes off and on every day but he still bounces off the walls and acts like he gets zero exercise. I want to tire him out but he gets bored with fetch and tug-o-war.
When he is older I plan to do everything with him (hiking, running, swimming, you name it) but as for now I don't want to cause any joint/hip/etc problems by over-doing exercise. What are some ways to tire him out while avoiding future problems with joints/hips/etc?
(Also, he has an abundance of toys including Kongs, Nyla bones, plush toys, tennis balls, and many more but like I said he gets bored easily)
2 AnswersDogs8 years agoA couple questions for dog owners?
Answer whatever question(s) you want to.
✺ When your dog was a puppy (or your current pup) did you wait until your pup got all its shots before taking it out on walks or to public places? I still have to wait about 5 more weeks before I can take my puppy outside on walks and to public places, something I cannot wait to do. Also, did you still take your pup outside to potty in your own yard? And did you still let your pup meet vaccinated dogs or no?
✺ Do you vacuum/sweep daily because of dog hair? I did it every day before I got my pup and now that I have him I actually have something to vacuum and sweep up! He is allowed on the couch but has his special bed/cover thing on one part, he knows he is only allowed to stay on that. He isn't allowed on my other furniture or my bed. I don't want dirt/mud/feces/fur where I sleep or sit.
✺ Do you own any other pets but dogs? How does that go? I was thinking about getting a small pet, maybe a Cat or other small animal when my pup is older. He is almost 9 weeks, I was just wondering how you went about letting them meet or if you did?
✺ Have you ever gotten nasty/rude comments about your dog(s)? And has your dog/pup every hurt himself/herself?
Today when I went to answer the door my puppy somehow managed to climb on top of my table from getting on a chair in attempt to eat a piece of chicken that was on a plate, when I closed the door I said "Andy" and heard a whine. I ran into the kitchen (where he was) and he was holding his paw up whining. I rushed him to the Vet. As I was waiting to go in with him (super busy, apparently a lot of dogs had eaten chocolate from V.day) some lady asked me what happened to him. I told her that he fell off a table and she gave me a nasty look and said "well, you should have been watching it!"... I know it was my fault for leaving him alone, even though it was only for a few minutes. I was just wondering if anybody has given you nasty/rude comments/looks about your dog(s) ?
(Oh, Andy (my pup) is fine now, he had a very small (greenstick) fracture and they wrapped his foot up and gave him some pain medicine, said it would heal in a few weeks and he would be just fine.)
20 AnswersDogs8 years agoWhat activities can I do with my Boxer as a puppy and an adult?
I have a almost 9 week old Boxer puppy that I have had for almost 2 weeks. Since he hasn't had all of his shots I can only take him into my backyard. I don't have a fence up yet (my first dog, I need to wait until it's a little warmer out to get one put in) so I have to leash him when I take him out.
I have a 50' poly training leash, but he hates it and gets tangled in it when he runs so he just sits there.
When he is inside he gets bored and just chews on his toys. I do play with him but he gets bored and goes back to chewing. He doesn't find a lot of interest in fetch and when I try to run around (trying to get him to chase me) he just sits there and looks at me.
How can I exercise him? He doesn't know his name yet (Andy) so I can't take him off-leash outside... I do have a playpen but it isn't very big and he can't really run around in it.
So how can I exercise him?
And also, what are some activities I can do with him when he is older? I am a very active person and would love to take him running, jogging, hiking, and swimming (he LOVES water)... but what are some other things to do with him? And what age can I do the things mentioned above?
Thanks!
3 AnswersDogs8 years agoAny info on feeding "Prey Model Raw" ?
Hi.
I have an 8 week old Boxer puppy that I took in 1 week ago. I am a first time dog owner so know nothing about dog foods or anything on that subject.
He has dry skin and is constantly scratching and chewing himself. He is currently eating Iams and I want to switch his food to the best possible diet out there for dogs.
I need as much info on it as possible, how much do I feed? What do I feed? When? How? etc etc.
He weighs 10 lbs and will be 9 weeks old in a few days.
Oh, does it cost more or less to feed a Raw diet? I could care less if it was $100 a month as long as he is healthy, but a lot of people say you save money and it is 1,000 times better than feeding kibble... is this true? Thanks!
5 AnswersDogs8 years agoWhat are the chances of my puppy getting Parvovirus from my backyard?
I have a 8 week old Boxer pup (have had him for 1 week) and I have never had a dog/pet before.
He has had his first shots at 6 weeks and is having his second puppy shot in a few days. I told one of my relatives that he has been doing very well with going potty outside and she freaked out and said I cannot take him outside until he has had all his puppy shots.
I only take him to my backyard to potty and run around, I have 4 acres of land and live in a sort of rural area, all my neighbors that have dogs are kept inside their house or fenced yard. I have never in the 4 years I have lived here seen a stray dog come onto my property. Before I took him out for the first time I bleached a section of my yard (where I take him to potty) with 10 gallons of clorox bleach, he has been going out to potty for 1 week now in my yard and hasn't contracted anything, so this means my yard is safe and he will be fine, right?
I am not going to take him for a walk or to any public place unless he is in my arms until he has had all his shots, and even if he did contract Parvo he would be hospitalized for as long as it takes to make him better. I am now starting to worry about him getting Parvo, everyone that has came into my house is told to take their shoes off at my porch and put them in a box I put out there. They are also to wash their hands/arms before touching anything in my house (they touched their shoes when they took them off)
I do not want to use puppy pads, that is just nasty and wouldn't it teach him that it is O.K to potty inside? I don't want that but I don't want to lose him.
Some reassurance would be nice.
5 AnswersDogs8 years agoAny tips on training a puppy?
I took in a 8 week old Boxer puppy 1 week ago for a friend, I have never owned a dog before so I am still new to everything. I am currently trying my best to find good, reputable trainer for him and enter him into puppy kindergarten/training classes but I am having a hard time doing so, I thought that until I could find one I could go ahead and start with some of the basics... except I don't know where to begin.
So far he is doing wonderful with potty training, he hasn't had an accident for 5 days and he hasn't attempted to chew on any furniture for almost the same amount of time. I use positive reinforcement only, he has very weak nerves and cannot handle being yelled at.
I can get him to Sit for me if I hold a treat over his head and move it back, so now whenever I hold up a treat I will say "Sit" and he sits. He is very smart and very willing to please.
I don't really care if he knows tricks, I want him to know the basic commands such as Sit, Stay, Down, Off, On, Quiet, Come, etc.
I work with him on training for a few minutes several times a day, I end it when he acts like he is getting bored or tired, I want him to find training and obeying a fun, good thing.
So can anybody direct me to a website or give me any information on how to teach him the things listed above and any tips?
Thanks.
3 AnswersDogs8 years agoWhat should I do with my puppy when my company comes over?
I am having company over for Valentines day in 1 1/2 hours.
I have a 8 week old Boxer puppy that I got just 1 week ago and I am not sure what to do with him when my friends come over, they of course will want to see him but I don't know how he will react and I am not sure what to do if he reacts a certain way, so I have some questions on that.
If he is scared/very wary of them, what should I do? Reassure him? Allow that behavior?
If he is overly excited and is jumping around and barking, what should I do? Ignore him and praise him when he calms down?
I have a Exercise pen and a Crate for him, as well as a baby gate that keeps him in the Kitchen... I know they will want to see him and I want him to be well-socialized but I am not sure how to do it.
I will not play music and I will make sure everybody is relatively quiet and calm so he doesn't get scared, but I am not sure how to properly introduce him and what I should do depending on his reaction.
Thank you.
9 AnswersDogs8 years agoWhen is the ideal time to neuter my dog?
I have a 8 week old Boxer puppy that I took in 1 week ago (just to clear this up, I didn't get him from a breeder. I took him in from a friend that passed away, I have no idea where he came from)
And me being a first time dog owner, I don't know anything about Spaying or Neutering.
He was checked by the Vet yesterday, he got his Stool tested for worms (and he was treated for worms), he had a Urinalysis and Blood work done as well as the Vet feeling him all over with his hands, checking in his mouth, ears, eyes, etc.
He was pretty healthy except he had worms but we have treated him for that.
Anyway, the very last thing that I want is a bunch of puppies so of course I am going to get him neutered, but I don't know how serious the operation is, what the risks are, what the pros/cons are, and I don't know what age is best to do it? I heard that if you neuter them too early it can stunt their growth? I want him to grow as much as his little heart desires, but I don't want puppies.
His testicles haven't descended yet, when are they suppose to? And if they never do, will that be a problem? So, any information on this would be appreciated.
Also, I will be entering him into Puppy training classes sometime. I don't plan on having an out-of-control dog anytime soon.
Thanks.
5 AnswersDogs8 years agoWhat "manners" should a dog have?
I heard that dogs should be taught certain manners, what are they? I have a puppy that is 8 weeks old and want to start on training so he is well-behaved as an adult. (he is a Boxer so will be fairly large as an adult)
Thanks
5 AnswersDogs8 years agoDid I get enough stuff? (New puppy, new dog owner) ?
I went out to PetSmart this morning after going to the Vets and bought some stuff for my new 8 week old Boxer puppy. I have never owned a dog before so I got a bunch of stuff, I spent $1,021 in the store which isn't a big deal for me, I put aside over $4,000 to spend on him, over half my savings (but I don't care, I wasn't saving it for a specific reason)
Here is what I got, (that I remember)
Wire Crate
Compact Deep Cleaner
Pet Gate
Food and Water bowl
MuttLuks booties
Exercise Pen
Dog Bed
Collar and Leash
Rain Coat
Natures Miracle Urine Destroyer and Stain Remover
Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil
Dog Hoodie (jacket)
Kong Harness
Snake Toy
Bone Shaped Toy Box (so cute, had to get it)
Poly 50' Training Leash
Multivitamin for Puppy's
Bristle Brush
Tag with information
Martha Stewart Puppy Shampoo
Martha Stewart Puppy Conditioner
Chew Stick
Slicker Brush
Chew Stick (another one)
Octopus Toy
Chuck It toy
Pick-up Bags
ID Tag
Toy Rope
Chuck It ball
Plush Octopus toy
Duck toy
Frog toy
Carrot toy
5 bags of Zukes training treats
Flying Disc
Canned Puppy food
Scrub Brushes
Waste Scooper
Dish soap, gentle and unscented (to clean bowls)
Tooth Brush and Tooth Paste (for dogs)
Container (to hold food)
Water Bottles
Portable food and water bowl
4 Stick Bones
2 Pig ears
1 Kong
Peanut Butter (in a bottle thing) to stuff in Kong
Bed for Crate
Sprayer thing for bathtub to give him bathes
Extra Towels (to dry him off with, I don't want to dry my dog off with a towel that I use...)

Does it sound like I got everything?? I have him in his playpen right now, he is chewing on a Pig ear. I have put away all my wires and I took up all my carpets/rugs. I am a bit OCD so I like everything to be clean and in place, I also bought containers for his toys... I am new to all this so have no idea if I got too little or too much. Any advice?
Thanks
7 AnswersDogs8 years agoWhat should I do when my puppy does something bad?
I have a 8 week old Boxer puppy, I got him 1 week ago.
I have zero experience with dogs, I have never owned one before so I am new to everything.
When he has an accident in the floor I pick him up and take him outside, it has worked for me since he hasn't had an accident in 4 days. I take him out after he plays, eats/drinks, and wakes up. I use bleach and natures miracle cleaning supply for pet stains and I scrub the area that he "went" on for 5-10 minutes. I have taken up all my carpets and take him out every 2 hours.
When he chews on something like my furniture I pick him up and take him somewhere else.
I don't want him to fear me, I yelled at him once and he freaked out and hid under my couch for 20 minutes. He just can't handle being yelled at. He has been chewing on his toys and like I said above he hasn't had an accident in a while.
Is this alright? I refuse to hit him and he has very "weak nerves"... he is a great puppy and I just want what's best for him. He hasn't attempted to chew my furniture in a while, almost 5 days. I watch him 24/7 and if he acts like he is going to start chewing I grab a toy and call him to me. If he acts like he is going to potty I take him outside.
So I am just wondering if the way I am training him is alright? I am going to start him in puppy classes whenever I find a good place to do it.
Thanks!
5 AnswersDogs8 years agoHow can I exercise my Boxer puppy?
I took in a 8 week old Boxer puppy 1 week ago (he was 7 weeks old when I got him from a friend)
This is my first time owning a dog so everything is new to me, I have been researching on Boxers and they say that they are high-energy dogs.
I am fine with that as I am a high-energy person myself. I love to run, jog, hike, swim, anything and everything.
Well my puppy is starting to become bored and has been chewing and eating everything he see's. I went out this morning and bought over $100 worth of toys (I spent a total of $1,021) for him, being a first time dog owner I pretty much just bought one of everything. He likes his toys but is still bored, the Vet said that I shouldn't take him out (only to potty in my own yard) until he has had all of his shots. That takes 8 more weeks.
I did buy a long training leash thing at the store, it is 50' long and is a "Poly Training Leash". I thought I could take him outside on the leash and let him run around, is this okay? I have 4 acres of land and I do not have a fence yet. I am going to wait until it is warmer outside and get one put in. I have never seen a stray dog come into my yard, I live in a rural area but everyone that lives around me keeps their dogs inside or in their yard.
I did buy booties too, he always lifts his paws up (their is ice/snow everywhere) when I take him out to potty so I thought that would help. They are called "MuttLuks"
Also, I bought him a large crate with a divider, how do I get him used to it?
I put some toys in their and a bed but he doesn't show any interest in it and I don't want to force him into it, but I want to potty train his properly. I work a night shift and keep him in the kitchen while I am gone, he cannot hold it all night but I am able to come home and let him out once or twice, my boss has dogs and he understood.
Thank you!
2 AnswersDogs8 years agoShould I change my puppy's food?
I just acquired a 7-10 week old Boxer puppy 1 week ago. When I got him he was eating Iams and so I just kept him on that.
Having no experience with dogs I don't know if I should change his food or not, he seems to be itching/chewing himself quite a bit but he doesn't have fleas and I heard that he might be itchy because of his food.
He is eating " Iams Healthy Naturals Puppy With Chicken "
link to it-
So can anybody give me a list of good dog/puppy foods? I am going out tomorrow and buying a bunch of stuff so I can get the new food. Also, can I just start feeding him the new food or do I need to do it slowly or..? thanks
6 AnswersDogs8 years agoDo you have a fenced in yard?
I just adopted a Boxer puppy 1 week ago and every time I take him out I take him on a leash and walk him around for 10-20 minutes until he potties.
I have a house and a large yard (4 acres) so I was thinking about fencing it in.
So, do you have a fenced yard? What kind of fence is it and do you know/remember how much it cost? Also, how much did you fence in?
Thanks!
6 AnswersDogs8 years agoI have a few questions on how to care for a puppy?
I asked a similar question earlier, so for more information on my situation you can look at my other question.
I have decided to keep my friend that passed away's puppy. I have already had him for 1 week, I have never owned a dog before so I am trying to research and figure everything out.
Right now he is eating "iams" puppy food, what he ate when my friend had him. I have a few questions though, he is a Boxer puppy and is I think 7-10 weeks old.
What is the best dog food out there?
How much exercise does he need now and when he is older?
What is the best way to exercise a dog?
Should I enter him into puppy classes?
How much will everything cost in the beginning and with ongoing vet bills and such?
What is the best kind of Collar/Harness/Leash?
When is the best time to get him neutered or should I?
And just some small questions-
What is the best kind of Shampoo/Brushes for him?
Does his breed require special grooming?
What kind of crate should I get for him? How do I use it and what size?
How do I potty train him?
When will he be able to hold his bladder all night long?
And will he be alright if he is left alone all night? I work a night shift.
I am sorry if that is too many questions, you don't have to answer them all. You can pick and choose the ones you are knowledgeable in.
And the last question, what should I name him??
Thank you so much for reading and answering. I truly appreciate any help I can get.
4 AnswersDogs8 years agoHow do you take care of a dog/puppy?
Hi..
1 week ago my friend came over to my house in a hurry and asked me to watch her puppy, I said okay and she handed it to me and gave me a couple things then left and said she would call later.
Little did I know that she was on her way to her mothers house in a hurry and the roads were very slippery from the ice... she passed away and now I have her puppy with me.
I hadn't seen my friend in a while and she had just gotten this pup. He doesn't have a name, I don't know his age or breed. She left his collar, leash, food and water bowl and food.
I am not going to give her puppy away, but I don't know how to care for a dog. I love dogs but have never owned one, only as a very young child (6-7 years old).
The kind of food she left me was called " Iams " and I went out and bought another bag. I have been feeding him according to the bag and I take him outside to pee after he eats, drinks, and wakes up. He has had a few accidents.
I went to the dollar store and got him a leash, flea shampoo and chew toy.
I was hoping some experienced dog owners could give me some tips? What do I need to buy? Should I take him to the vet? Should I walk him? What should I feed him? I want the absolute best life for this puppy. I have $7,000 in savings just in case... how much of this should be used for him? I don't care if I have to use it all. I can keep saving.
I am in a good financial situation, I have a house, stable job and life. I will do whatever is nessecary for this puppy to be happy, I just don't know how to accomplish that.
So any tips or information at all is honestly very appreciated.
Oh, and what breed could he be? He is a male, he looks pretty young, he has a wrinkly face and he is brown with a white tipped tail and a little white an his face and paws.. Here is 2 pictures of him,

http://www.flickr.com/photos/93172209@N06/84683304...
He sleeps a lot and I was just wondering if you know what breed he is, would he be a good exercise companion? I am big into running, hiking, and any kind of activity. I work a night shift and leave him in my kitchen at night with some blankets, pee pad (just in case, I don't really know how to potty train him), chew toys and food/water.
Sorry if this was long, I really just want the best for him.
Oh and, what should I name him? She had just gotten him and he doesn't have a name. I have no clue and have just been calling him dog or puppy.
thank you
