Playful pup not getting enough exercise?

I have a 4 month old Boxer puppy that will not settle down. He had all of his puppy shots and just one week ago finished them so I have just started letting him down on the ground in public, for the 2 months I have had him I have been carrying him *everywhere*, to the park, vet, and just to walk around and letting people pet him.

I have a large fenced backyard and I let him play there for a few hours a day, even though most of the time he just layed around chewing on him bone. I heard it is bad to over-exercise puppies and so I have been careful, I take him on 10-20 minute walks daily and play with him for about 30 minutes off and on every day but he still bounces off the walls and acts like he gets zero exercise. I want to tire him out but he gets bored with fetch and tug-o-war.

When he is older I plan to do everything with him (hiking, running, swimming, you name it) but as for now I don't want to cause any joint/hip/etc problems by over-doing exercise. What are some ways to tire him out while avoiding future problems with joints/hips/etc?

(Also, he has an abundance of toys including Kongs, Nyla bones, plush toys, tennis balls, and many more but like I said he gets bored easily)

Update:

Oh, he does go to puppy training classes. So far he knows Sit, Stay, Down, Come, Leave it, and he and I have also taught him some tricks with my free-time.

Update 2:

He is being trained to go onto his mat, sit, and stay before I even open the door for someone to come in or go out. He is not allowed to jump up on people and we are working on barking. Having manners is important to me for my dog, I have had too many dogs jump and bark and nip at me, and I won't have that with mine.

First, I hope that you and your dog feed off of each others love for many year to come!

That said, The Boxer is a happy, high-spirited, playful, curious and energetic dog. He will probably be highly energetic all of his life. Don't try to exercise him to the point that he will lose his energy. Instead, ask the trainers at his puppy training classes how to train him so that he does not jump on people, so that he will lie down and rest when you are busy... These dogs are wonderful dogs but they do need training.

a puppy is no different than a child.

You cannot hold them and carry them all the time.

take him for walks, lots of walk...he won't settle down because he needs exercise.

If you would have ever witnessed a litter of pups in a natural setting you would see that they wrestle, run, jump and play all day long...then they all collapse in a heap to nap and in an hour or so it starts all over again.

get that dog on some nice long walks or teach him to run with you when you ride bike or roller skate.

At 4 months he is hardly an infant.
