Is this prophesy about the Catholic Church?

1 Timothy 4:1-4 (KJV)

Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;

2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.

4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:

Sure sounds like it.

    The_Cricket: Thinking Pink! - That only applies to nuns and priest not people who attend the catholic church. Orthodox Catholic the priests can marry.

    It's talking about the latter times not now or the past. The Catholic church has been around for a long time so I doubt that's what the scripture means. I don't personal agree with Catholic theology but I don't believe that scripture has any thing to do with that. I would say that it would have to be the mark of a cult that would woo people over to false teachings. Keep in mind that this scripture could also be talking about the times in which the "Early First Century Christians" have lived as well.

    Much of the bible is historical because that's when they were establishing things. The early church resembled a Jewish Synagog and not what the modern gentile churches have today. Look up how they worshiped and how the seating arrangement was. Men sat separately from the Women. Women used to yell at the men to get an understanding of what the sermon was about and thus they were told to keep silent and wait till after the church service. The earliest christian church was held in a Jewish synagogue not what we see today with most modern christian churches. It was neither catholic or protestant!

    God is restoring the early church as it had been in the begging so both protestants and Catholics are wrong! Please both sides start doing some research on line because I have been finding a lot of things lately! http://jewishrootsofchristianity.org/

    It seems unlikely. Much of the passage simply doesn't fit the Roman Catholic Church. Specifically:

    - forbidding to marry

    - commanding to abstain from meats (though I suppose you could weakly argue that a command to abstain from "meats" only 6 days out of every year qualifies, it does not seem to match the meaning at all)

    I certainly don't agree with everything that the Catholic Church teaches...but they *are* a Christian sect; they *do* preach the gospel, and they *do* (as an organization) want to lead people to salvation. They have not "departed from the faith" in these very important - essential, fundamental - ways.

    The Catholic Church forbids no one to marry. But, in the spirit of Mary, Joseph, Jesus, Paul, and numerous other holy celibate people, she heartily embraces those who wish to lead celibate lives. She gives them homes in monasteries and in the Latin Rite, it is the norm for priests to be celibate.

    The Church commands people to abstain from meat six days of the year because it is a sign of wealth to eat it. I don't think that is what Paul was talking about here, though.

    Overall, an extremely weak argument.

    Well, that sounds nothing like a prophecy for the Catholic Church except to warn the Church of future heretics who would try to attack the unity of the one Church founded by Jesus personally. Does it not sound more about the Protestant rebellion rather than the Church Christ built? God bless!

    Congratulaions! You get ten points on the twistometer, that wonderful invention used to twist words to mean anything one wants.

    Heck, you can claim that 1 Timothy 4:1-4 applies to football fans, vegetarians, or any other person or group. Just twist the words.

    I'm not too sure about this one, but I'll give it a stab. No. In fact, that prophecy has yet to be fulfilled. Must not be the End Times yet. Well, I'm now off to a job interview as a zoo keeper.

  • How so? Fasting was a Christian custom from the earliest days of Christianity, and there's nothing wrong with it. Also, Catholics aren't "forbidden" to marry. It's one of the Sacraments. It's true that priests aren't allowed to marry once they become priests, but in some cases, a man who is married may be allowed to become a priest anyway.

    Remember that Jesus didn't marry, and neither did Paul.

    No. There is no prophecy about the Church ending.
