Could a 2005 corvette work as a first car?
Forget about the price of the actual car for just a sec. Its like 17-18k which could get you a corolla or something. It may not be the safest, but it will make the driver(in this case someone who is 17) unable to carry many people. Would it be a bad choice?

Getting a teenager a corvette is just a bad idea all the way around. Go with something reliable and practical instead of a speeding ticket, maintenance nightmare, insurance nightmare death box.
Corolla makes much more sense. Or you can get a Scion (built by Toyota) pretty cheap as well. I wouldn't recommend the TC because it is a sports car.
Why are you afraid of the number of passengers? If you are worried about what goes on, install a dashboard camera that records inside and outside of the car along with GPS data. That way you know EVERYTHING that happens behind the wheel.
***EDIT*** I only recommend Toyota because of their low maintenance and reliability. A friend's Camry has over 460,000 miles on it and hardly anything beyond regular maintenance. I have also owned 1 Corolla and 2 Scions with nothing but regular maintenance and LOTS of hard miles.

In many jurisdictions, where graduated licensing laws are in place, an underage driver cannot carry passengers without an adult in the car anyway. Cops will pull them over and a citation can keep you from applying for your full license for a period of time.
Teenagers are subject to distractions just like anyone else. Yes, multiple passengers are a distraction, but so is the radio, a cell phone, the cute blonde in the Focus the next lane over... Plus, the Corvette is a high performance car that carries high insurance and repair rates. Modern Corvettes are actually a fairly safe car compared to, say, the Porsche 911 or other supercars when driven responsibly, but we are talking about a teenager. A teenager who has a fast car is much, much more likely to abuse the capabilities of the car without knowing its limits.
Want to limit the number of passengers in the car and avoid the "wrapped the car around an oak tree at 125 MPH" problem? Buy a pickup truck like a Tacoma, Ranger, Frontier, et cetera, with a four-cylinder engine.

Please go to www.contemporarycorvette.com. Look at their wrecks of the week. People that wreck corvettes think they are the best drivers on the road. they may very well be, but it's the other guy. There is no protection in a vette. The front is close to the ground and takes on a good deal of road rash. The leather drivers seat bolster cant take everyday driving, the runflats are at least $1000.
At 17 you need to seriously step back and address your education, finances and other priorities. I love cars, vettes arent every day cars.

extremely expensive to fix, work on, and insure. it only takes 2 people and very few items with you. if you get into an accident you might not make it. this car is a cop magnet.
i would say a corvette isnt good for your first car
i would buy a lincoln navigator instead, the cost is about the same, plenty of room for 7-8 of your friends on a friday night to the mall, you sit higher up and see everything.

It's not a very practical choice for a first car. Gas mileage won't be great. Reliability sucks. Repair costs are high. Insurance is going to be outrageous for a 17 year old male. Check with your insurance company (or any insurance company) before making a decision.

The problems I see are two fold 1. they are not very reliable for daily drivers. 2. they are very expensive to insure for a youthful driver. They are very stylish and have good performance and most young people would love to have one but it is not practical. Good Luck
