Vector Kinematics Question?

I have a hw assignment. I'm not sure if its correct or not?

An Astreroid is heading toward the Earth at a speed of 50 km/s. Astronauts attach a giant rocket to the asteroid giving it an acceleration of .0225 km/s/s perpendicular to its original direction. If the rocket is fired for 9 minutes, by what angle does the direction of the asteroid's velocity vector change?

a) 9min * 60 sex *.0225 = 12.15 km/sec. arctan (12.15/50) = 13.658 degrees. Is this correct?

b) What total distance does the asteroid travel during the 9 minutes the rocket is fired?

This one I didn't know what to do.

Thanks in advance!

    a) is correct

    b) call the initial direction the x direction and the perpendicular direction y

    x=v*t=distance traveled in x direction

    y=.5a*t^2=distance traveled in y direction

    total distance traveled = (x^2 + y^2)^(1/2)

    a) is correct (clap!)

    b) To calculate DISTANCE it wolud require calculus and other V high level maths

    but DISPLACEMENT is

    squareroot((50*9*60)^2 +(12.15/2 *9*60)^2)

    =27198.5602km
