Think of the probabilities of rolling 2 dice. Each number has a 1/6 chance of occurring on one dice.
Imagine rolling a 1 is the same a earthquake (P(E)) and rolling a 2 is the same as a tornado (P(T)).
Earthquake & Tornado: Same as rolling 1 & 2 i.e. P(E) x P(T)
Two earthquakes: Same as rolling 1 & 1 i.e. P(E) x P(E)
Two tornadoes: Same as rolling 2 & 2 i.e. P(T) x P(T)
