Can the company that didn't employ me, ask me to pay for the CRB check they had done?

I was offered a job conditional upon a reference from my last employer. She refused to give me a reference, despite telling me when I was employed there that I was one of the best workers she'd ever had!

The job offer was withdrawn because of the lack of reference, but they still want me to pay for the CRB (£50). With no job I have only my JSA of 71 a week and they want 50 of it! Help!

Update:

@The Great Quizoo... the company said the cost of the CRB check would be deducted from my first wages, but there will be no first wages.

If you were given a job then they are entitled to reclaim the money, as you did not get the job you do not have to pay them anything. As it is their policy to carry out CRB checks they must foot the bill not you.

  • As part of the application process, they can require you to pay for the CRB. If you agreed to do so, they can enforce that. If they simply asked afterward, you are free to tell them to suck eggs.
