Christians, a question about Revelation 11, regarding the two witnesses. Is it possible... (see details)?

Is it possible that the two witnesses are institutions rather than literal people, and the abilities that they're imbued with (such as killing with fire if anyone tries to harm them, raining down plagues, preventing rain, etc.) are symbolic rather than literal? Do you think this view is heretical or completely incompatible with the text? Who do you personally think the two witnesses are, if you've speculated about it?

Others are also welcome to answer, but please try to answer from a Christian perspective if possible. If not possible, please at least be funny in your answers. ;)

    Taking the Book of Revelation

    as anything but allegory

    seems pretty insane to me.

    It's almost like someone

kept a log of their nightmares.

But if there is some relevance

to reality to be found in its pages,

I think it would be that of a political satire

and particularly anti-Roman work of the day.

    Kinda like Alice in Wonderland,

only not as funny or entertaining

what with the pain and death

    and destruction and all..

This is symbolism, so the two and not 3 or 4 witnesses speak about a group of people who serve as such to God and Christ. That the number is no bigger than 2 shows that their number is few.

The abilities are sure to refer to spiritual things that make their 'enemies' suffer from what these do when they witness. We can see that in Rev 11:10, when these saints are silenced that their enemies rejoice 'because these two prophets had been a torment to those who dwell on the earth.'

When we look just at what is going on here on Yahoo R&S, we can see how irate the atheists are because of our beliefs and how angry, how hurt they are by our continued faith in God.

These two are also said to be the same ones mentioned in Zechariah chapter 4.

Did I say it? These two then refer to the few remaining saints who are alive today and who faithfully discharge their work - namely, that of bearing witness to Jesus until they are killed off.

Yes, that's pretty smart of you... Revelation is SYMBOLIC and so the two Witnesses are indeed symbolic of a religious institution or organization made up of spirit anointed Christian JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES (the fire and the plagues are also symbolic).
