Is the U.S Coast Guard part of the DHS or DOD?

It seems like they'd fit more into DHS since they aren't really for national security. But they do stop drug trafficking and pirates.

We've been the central agency of the DHS since it was founded in 2003. The Coast Guard has ALWAYS been separated from DoD (and the Dept of War before that) since we were founded in 1789 - so we can operate to enforce federal laws. Since the Civil War, and the passing of the Posse Comitatus Act, we've been the ONLY military service that has been able to enforce federal laws.

As to falling under the DoD, we've only been transferred over there twice... during WWI and WWII. The way the law reads, during time of war, we _CAN_ be placed under the Department of the Navy - we don't HAVE to be. Personally, I don't ever see it being done again.

And as for National Security, you'd be amazed. We've been involved in every conflict that the US has been in since we were founded - and drove most of the landing craft on D-Day and almost all of the river patrol boats during Vietnam. We're also the only branch that has a PERMANENT base in Bahrain right now - the other services send their folks to the Persian Gulf on a temporary basis - we are permanently based there.

They have people there, but their headquarters is across the river in DC (on the Anacostia River), they are part of DHS, not DoD.
