Is the Post Office just Doomed?
What’s going to happen with the US Postal Service? It’s been bleeding money and stores are closing, and people are just using email and shipping companies now.

I mean, maybe they can get into delivery like the UPS has done with Amazon, but they aren’t doing to well at it atm.
And why didn’t they change all this during the 90s? It’s not like we’re stuck in stage coach days, though it seems like with government agencies creativity is not something that’s generally encouraged.

email has reduced demand for first class mail, but eBay and Amazon has boosted package delivery exponentially. the Post Office does not close because its service is required by the Constitution. There is no requirement that the Post Office make a profit, however it has been operated as an independent agency for longer than i can remember. An independent agency means it is self-financed by selling stamps and services and does not receive tax money. So taxpayer revolt is not in the offing.
The current difficulty with the USPO is caused by congressional oversight requiring it to do financially imprudent actions. Like pre-paying retirements 75 years in advance (yep mail carriers not yet born are having their pensions funded). Congress likes this plan because that surplus money has to be invested in Treasury Bonds that finance the debt. So if anything the record of the USPS has been to absorb federal debts, not increase them.

I hear that business has been in a steady decline since this whole Email thing came about.
