Plus even though they were older all the girls were crazy for Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt. When I think about it, I don't really remember many music hearthrob types from the 90s. In the beginning of the 90s there was New Kids on the Block, but they were a little before my time. I knew some girls who were into the Backstreet Boys, or N Sync (and even one who liked Hanson!), but they were nowhere near as big a deal as the actors. But you have to remember 2 things: 1) TV before the 90s was something like 20 or 30 channels in most places and there weren't many teenage guys on TV before then, and 2) they didn't make many movies for younger teens before that, either. Having heathrob actors was a whole new thing that came around after more channels led to having more shows, and the DVD format which was much cheaper than VHS gave anybody and everybody the ability to publish movies a lot more cheaply, which led to an expansion in demographics there as well.
