Spelling 101: Why do I commonly see?

self-defense written unhyphenated?

Update:

Thank you! Those were both very helpful, especially rule #6 in the second link. =] It says to hyphenated all words beginning with "self" except for selfish and selfless (as I thought). =]

Full-page explanation at the Wiki link below and also grammarbook.com. By the way in British(no hyphenation)English 'defense' is spelt 'defence'.

A definitive collection of hyphenation rules does not exist; rather, different manuals of style prescribe different usage guidelines. The rules of style that apply to dashes and hyphens have evolved to support ease of reading in complex constructions; editors often accept deviations from them that will support, rather than hinder, ease of reading.
