Is a Lapso Apso a good family dog? We have no small kids in the family but we do have small grand-kids.?

I hope I got the spelling right. We can get one and it is a cute little female that has been fixed. She seems friendly and loving to us. It seems like she likes a lot of attention also. I am retired so I can spend time with her. I would just like to hear from other owners and get their opinion of them as far as being family friendly. We don't want her to bite invited strangers to the home either. This one sleeps alot and likes to chase cats.

The typical Lhasa Apso is medium as to friendliness or sociability with family, LOW as to sociability with children, and VERY LOW as to sociability w/ strangers. Behavioral problems can include irritable snapping. They have low behavioral consistency & low emotional stability. (All of which is why they are NOT recommended for children.)

They have a VERY HIGH indoor activity level and HIGH outdoor activity level, so you also need to decide if you can put up with that, as well as a tendency to fight w/ other dogs. Lhasa have very HIGH watch dog (alarm) ability, low guard dog ability. Beagles, Border Terriers & Bichons are all better with children.

I would never, ever get a Lhasa Apso if I had regular small children visitors. I know some people have had other experiences, but I have always found Lhasa Apsos to be one of the worst breeds with children. They can be extremely nippy, and many skip straight to biting. Lhasa Apsos were actually bred as guard dogs, and are often extremely territorial with strangers. If you like the Lhasa Apso but need a dog that deals well with children and guests, the Shih Tzu is an infinitely better choice.

Well I had a Lhasa/chi/terrier and she was an Amazing dog. Her mother was full Lhasa apso and she was amazing with kids and didn't mind strangers at all, just like her babies. They were very good little alarm dogs though and would always bark when someone was at the door. None of them, puppies or mom, ever had any nipping aggression problems. But they can be that way, only if not socialized and trained properly. But it doesn't hurt to try because every Lhasa I've met has been a Dream. And you say she likes to sleep so that's good! Lol she may want to be a lap doggy. :) try introducing her to the grandkids on a leash and make sure they know not to pull and play rough etc. and you'll see for sure but I think they are sweet gentle dogs.

Hi there. I had a Lhasa Apso when I was a teen and he was a wonderful pet, however very food agressive. He was also horrible with small children which is why he was given to us. (He had bitten a small child). On the other hand, I also had a Lhasa crossed with a Shih tzu and he was amazing in every way. So I would presume that if your pup was socialized properly and you took her to puppy obedience training, she could be great. All the best.

Yes. Here is a link for more info. Just make sure that there is no strangers in your family. They do like to be left alone when eating as well. They love family but you should make them frequent so that they can get used to them as for strangers maybe you could train her or make sure she knows that they are invited make a big show of that etc.

IF you insist on an expensive purebred, then I'd recommend a Labrador Retriever. Otherwise, I'd encourage you to save your money and save a life by adopting a puppy..
