How do estimation & place value play into long division by a 2-digit #?

Give an explanation that shows the use of estimation and place value in the course of

carrying out long division by a 2-digit number. I read my textbook for an explanation, but I couldn't find anything direct. PLEASE HELP!!!

If I'm interpreting the question correctly you should put, "estimation allows us to come up with a number that we can compare to the answer obtained by long division. If the answer has more or less digits than the estimation then there is probably an error"

If we divide by a 2 digit number, the first digit will be in the tens column. For example:

    ............. 6

......---------------- ... We pick 7 in the quotient to do the estimation.

73 |. 4.3,9.2.5..... 4 in the quotient is too small to divide by 7. We pick 43.

    ....... 4 2 ............ 43 divided by 7 is 6 . In what column do we place the 6 ?

.......------ ........... Since the 3 ( from the 43 ) in the thousands column. Thousands divided by ten.......... ..........................gives hundreds. The 6 goes in the hundreds column in the quotient.
