A question about "The Great Gatsby"?

This is more of an opinionated question about what I view to be one of the greatest American classics. I'd like all of your opinions about "The Great Gatsby". In your opinion, has Gatsby been corrupted by society, or is choice proof that he is part of the corruption?

I think both of those ideas are correct, however I believe Gatsby was more so corrupted by society. Obviously his own choices, such as dealing in shady business, effectively lead to his own wealth and eventual destruction. However, I think Gatsby was pressurized to become more affluent through society's demands; he wanted to be accepted into the upper classes and his love for the prosperous (in material terms) Daisy encouraged him further to achieve his aspirations of richness.
